Hi, the Carlton was one of the very few Belfast city centre "posh" restaurants of the 1980's, as I remember it.   It was used at lunchtime by the likes of Insurance companies and solicitors entertaining their clients.  In the evenings (early evenings) it was a hive of activity with a great atmosphere - the place to be seen in those days.  I have a feeling it moved to Donegall Square West for a while in the early to mid 1990's - must have closed it's doors around 1995-6, I think.  ;)

I remember going in there with Philip Blakely, the son of the owner of The Athletic Stores. Staff were always very friendly and the food was good.

Hiya Plastered,

The Carlton was an extremely good restaurant situated at 11, Wellington Place, Belfast. Table cloths and silverware .. no shoddy service in the Carlton Restaurant. Their telegram address was "Pastry, Belfast". It was a limited liability company Carlton (Belfast) Ltd., Bakers, Confectioners and Caterers. the directors were John Reid Davidson and William Joseph Davidson.

There was a book titled "Our Daily Bread - A Look at Ulster Bakeries" written by a James Davidson in 2004. It was published by Colourpoint Books of Newtownards. I think James may be a member of the family who owned the Carlton.

Christopher
Hi Christopher,
Sorry for being off topic. I stumbled across these posts whilst trying to trace my family history. I am James Davidson's Grandson. Do you have any contact details for him?

Best Mike

I remember the Carlton being a bar restaurant on Donegall Sq West as I used to have a lunch there occasionally with my Dad before getting the bus home on a Saturday afternoon - this was the 80s. If I remember right the Manageress had a Peruvian surname. Was married to a guy from there.
