I'm new to this, so bear with me.
The Willocks live in Maple Ridge and Dot came from Houston Park, off the Castlereagh Road, then Knockland Park, facing Stormont. Would 2coats know  Jeff and Lynda Monaghan from the Cregagh Road, or the Andrews family from the Cregagh. ( kids were Sue, Carol and Sammy)
Like 2 coats we really enjoy P.Vallarta...we stay at the Melia beside the smaller marina and also the Flamingoes at Nuevo Vallarta.

Hiya weedotty,

Welcome to Belfast Forum.

Could you or Twocoats tell me if Houston Park at Castlereagh was at one time part of the Blakiston Houston Estate? Was there a short cut to the Orangefield Cycle Track from that area or did you have to go along the Castlereagh Road to Bell's Bridge and head toward Bloomfield to get to the Cycle Track?

Been to the Villa Del Parmar  and it's sister hotel which is the fairly new and still in construction Flamingos. We'd recommend a tour out there, beautiful hotel and fabulous beach. Granted the night life in Bucerias is not nearly as good as in P.V.
By the way twocoats, do you post on any of  J.R's, Brenda's or Mogen's Puerto Vallarta websites?

Blakiston Houston...never heard of it. Houston Park had privately owned homes on one side, then the prefabs on the other and it was in the prefab we lived for many years. The cycle track had two official entrances, one was at the top of Houson Park (off Castlereagh Road) or through Orangefield lane at the roundabout at the top of the Bloomfield Road. There was another unofficial entrance along Grand Parade through some waste ground, and on the right of that was the other street where both sides of the street had the prefabs. Last visit there the prefabs were gone

Hiya weedotty,

I'd hardly expect you to know much about Blakiston Houston http://hort.net/+13l6 A Houston married a Blakiston a couple of hundred years ago. I suppose most people would say "Who cares! They are dead" However John Holmes Houston and guys like him helped to build the Belfast we all know. When we were at school, if we learnt history, we tended to learn World history and very little about the history of the city in which we were born and in which we lived. I find this Forum is extremely interesting as we are adding little bits of the history of 20th Century Belfast. You mentioned prefabs in your area and elsewhere Les Clark has mentioned the RAF camp near Dundonald during the years of World War II.

All the Best, Christopher

Thanks Christopher. Interesting reading.  Hubby Trevor remembers his mother bringing him up during the war to Orangefield House which  was a German prisoner of war camp and his Mum and aunt used to bring him and his brother up to see the prisioners. They gave the prisioners cigarettes through the chain link fence. Trevor used to play at Buller's field (off Orangefield Lane) I went to Orangefield school, then Ashfield, Trevor went to Strandtown, then Sullivan Upper in Holywood.  Both of us worked at various times in Shorts in Sydenham.

Note to twocoats... Trevor hung out around the Straight at Cregagh Estate in the mid to late 50's.

Hiya Weedotty,

Was Margaret Erskine still teaching art at Sullivan Upper when Trevor was there? She was a family friend. I cannot remember when she retired from teaching. Is Ashfield on the Holywood Road? Was Mrs Courtney still there when you were a pupil at the school?

Right then, guess I am last not but least! I am now retired. There you have it.

Quite right, Val, you are definitely not the least.

Retired ... what do you mean ??? You seem to be exceptionally busy searching for your ancestors.

"There you have it" now precisely do you mean by that comment ??? Every time your genealogical friends think they have it you automatically post another message indicating that they have not yet got it. You have enough ancestors to set up a government job creation scheme searching for them.

Hi Dotty. I lived at 80 Cooneen Way. Just at the corner of the Straight and Cooneen Way. Grew up there in the fifties. Perhaps your Hubby and I have friends in common. Noel and Jackie Benson. Brian Port. Kenny Logan. Latimer. Martins from Strachan corner to name a few

Hi Twocoats

Dot's better half here  ;D

It appears that I most likely know you.
My buddy, who used to be my neighbour at Bloomfield, lived close to you on Cooneen Way----Brian Porter, carrot red hair, he had 2 brothers, Trevor (named after me !) and Ian.
Brian Porter, Brian Port, and one of the Martins (dark brown/redish hair, I think his name was Mervyn ??? ) were in my class at Sullivan Upper.
The rest of the names sound farmiliar.
Other ones that I knew were Derek Nesbitt, Roberta Hill, Hazel Hetherington ( carrot red hair, one time girlfriend), Ann Lynley or Lyndley ??
We used to hang out on Rosetta Road at the shops opposite the Church.
In the early 60's I used to go with a girl who lived on Cooneen Way almost at the Straight--Esther Mc Williams  ??
It's a small world after all. Are you in touch with any of them?  I always wondered what happened to Brian Port, he was football mad, his father for some reason was strictly against it, so Brain ran away to Dublin, came back a few days later and Brian Porter's Dad did  mediator with his Dad ::)

Hi Les
All well here, hope you are all good.

Hi Bloomfield. Brian Porter was my pal until he moved to the Braniel. I lived almost opposite him. Brian Port I knew well. His Dad was a little strange. Brian Porter went to Sullivan I think . Kenneth Martin went to Sullivan as did Jackie Benson. I used to hang out at the shops at Rosetta. Shields was the Sweet shop. The emigrated to Aussie. I am heading to the Airport now to pick up friends from Bangor. I would like to keep in touch with you. Maybe a chat on the phone. I live in White Rock.

Hi Trev.

It's a small world, isn't it?  I've known Christopher casually for about 8 years, and now it seems we have a lot in common.

I wondered what was holding you up with Skype.  It works fine for me in Windows 98, BTW.  Stan and I have had a few chats.  I'm not bothering with Win XP until someone buys me a new computer.   8)

He's had scans this week and is now waiting to have angioplasty and various other arteries unblocked.  Of course, he is still smoking!

I'd have thought you were too old for porn sites by now    :P

Hi Twocoats

Brian Porter joined the R.A.F. The last time that I saw him was when he come home on leave, and we went out on an all night Pub crawl. :) That was in the 60's.
The Martin that was in my class at Sullivan was Kenneth, the ole memory is going at times.
If you hung out at Shields Sweet Shop you most likely remember what was the talk of the area for a good while.
One of the "Gang" was having a pee behind the shops, one of the girls came round, he whipped his zipper up too quick and just about circumcised himself, ambulance had to take him away, he walked funny for a while after that ;D

Hi Trevor! -
A bit of a 'domestic' going on here!!!     Which shops did you hang out around at Rosetta?  Beside the Rosetta Inn? - there is a Co-op there now.  Or further down on the corner of Mount Merrion Avenue?
