Do any of your directories show Fishmongers in the Professions and Trades Section, Mary.
If they do that should give you the answer. 1960 is probably too late.

1960 Fishmongers, Shankill Road

124. M. & H. Ewing
273. C. J. Ferguson

no its not too late, Ewing. .I knew I knew the name and you know what, I never even thought of looking in the Street [email protected]
Yes it was Ewings Fish Shop....Christopher, you're great  :)
My father was born above Frank Novins fish shop on the Old Park Road in 1919, and I knew my granda only worked in 2 fish shops, so yes Ewings rings a major bell. ... I wish I'd met my granda, he died before we came back from Canada, Thank you Christopher

bet he was the only Lennon on the Shankhill Road  8)

Was it related to Ewing's fish shop at Cherryvalley village?

Eastender, I'm not sure of the answer.

The 1960 directory shows three Ewing fishmongers.

J., 32, Gilnahirk Road.
M. & H., 124, Shankill Road.
William, 427, Lisburn Road and branches.

The 1987 directory shows three Ewing fishmongers.

M. & H., 124, Shankill Road.
Walter, 234, Crumlin Road and 14, Woodvale Road.
William, 427, Lisburn Road and branches.

Ewing of 32 Gilnahirk Road is the one at Cherryvalley Village, between Williamson's Butchers and Morley Thompson the Chemist.

My Dad worked there in his youth, the guy that owned it then was Matt Ewing, they also did poultry and game. I remember my Dad "Jim Henderson" telling how he used to cut the heads off the turkeys and they would still be running about. My Cousins son now works there and the boss is Walter Ewing

Hi Hendy, I'm still trying to figure out the exact year my granda worked there, he's quite old in the photo and he died in 1962 aged 66, not very old by todays standards, I reckon he worked there up to he was 60 maybe, I know he also worked in a fish shop in Sandyrow and in 1919 he was in Frank Nevins on the Old Park Road, what year was it that your Dad worked there? Isn't it a small world!

My Dad would have possibly have been 14 or 15 at the time so I reckon about 1944/45. We didn't live to far from the shop, Warkworth Street which was about 5 Streets behind the shop, heading toward Divis St way.

Hendy, My Dad says it was a Billy Ewing who owned Ewings at the time my grandfather worked there...he has given me dates, I just need to fit them in as he also worked for Ewings in Sandy Row, I think.
1919 - Frank Nevins, Old Park Road
1920's - Turners, don't know where that is
he was unemployed during the 30's, the time of depression he said, and I believe my Granda went to jail for non payment of whatever it is he couldn't pay for, sorry to be vague...taxes? rent? not sure
40's - Ewings, Sandy Row
50's - Ewings, Shankill Road

We are going well getting information on shops at the moment Mary .. Your messages about Ewings of the Shankill Road and Marianne's messages about Craig Reid's shop. Do you think we'll get around to the history of the department stores in Belfast. As far as I am aware there has not been a history written about them ... sure didn't they form a part of many of our lives.
