Hi Mitcher, I remember Mr. Shields quite well. Once meet him the Spanish Rooms [ after I left school of course!]. Br. Finn taught us in the 11 plus class. For a Christian Brother he was quite a kind teacher! There weren't that many of them! Went to St. Mary's Grammar after leaving Oxford Street in 1960.

I went to St Marys in Barrack St as well after my 11+.  Oxford St ended up in that school as well around 1971/72

Really enjoyed my time at Oxford Street. Remembering playing football in the old entry at the back of the school [usually about 50 a side!] Also remember the old iron fire escape up to the first floor and the outside toilets that would freeze up in the winter! No health and safety regulations in those days.

The staircase and the toilets were still there in my time also the football matches.  There was also a large open fire up the stairs that was used to heat the place.  Our ball used to be kicked over the wall and someone always had to go and get it.  The wall was of Musgrave St Barracks and I was never out of it. I could have drew a map of that place and now there is it getting closed.  I also remember that very few used the front door of the school but normally walked up that back yard and in the back door

I also remember going round to the Barracks to get the ball back. Forgot about the fireplace until you mentioned it. There was also a fire station round the corner and I can remember going there to have first aid to cut knees after one of our dinner time football matches. Happy days!!!

Yes the Fire Station was handy.  It has now relocated to Bankmore Street. At least the old Oxford St school is still there but I think it is a solicitors now.  I don't think there is any St malachys Christian Brothers Primary school now.

It is a pity as it was a good school and I have fond memories of being there.  There were Plays, Sports and other activities that always kept your interest after school was finished for the day.  I learnt how to swim by going with the shool one day a week to the Ormeau Baths in Ormeau Avenue

Hi Barry,  nice to hear from you again. I was over in Ireland in August and September and had a nice pint of Guinness on your behalf. Didn't make to Belfast this time unfortunately.
