Here in Hastings, Hawkes Bay we experienced a long, long rolling motion. The house shook and the bedroom and wardrobe doors opened and closed.  It was the most severe earthquake felt here in Hastings in the 42 years we have lived here. There is no damage to the house (TG) but further down the country there has been damage. Two people have been confirmed dead. :o

Thanks for your kind words everyone. I was having a wee holiday in Christchurch when it hit last night and thought it was never going to stop...it gave a hell of a shake. I've managed to get to Murchison and am staying here tonight until I find out when the Ferrys are able to sail back to Wellington who have also been badly hit...the wharf has been damaged so the ferries are unable to berth  :-\

So sad to hear a couple of people have lost their lives in Kaikoura.

Hello Brian,

Glad to hear that you and most people seem to be well.  I have seen a fair bit of infrastructure damage  .on T.V.    Hopefully no bad aftershocks.

Read yesterday that several naval ships from other nations including Australia were involved in evacuation of tourists from the South Island .  Could someone give me the name of a newspaper in N.Z. so that I can follow the situation. Thanks , Sam.

Thanks Brian...I see that the All Blacks didn't win any friends in Dublin.   They have been targeting players since before Brian O'Driscoll was carried off in N.Z.

The All Blacks were well out of order , how much did they pay the ref ? Funny how it was a Southern Hemisphere ref  ???

Did you know that today was the last day of the Somme campaign 100 years ago. ::)
I gave a lecture at lunchtime today on W.W.1. @ U3A....University of the Third Age.
Most people remember the 1st day ( 1st July ) seemingly not many remember the end of the campaign. :(
