The Spanish Rooms Publc House.
« on: February 13, 2007, 12:49:14 AM »
A fading memory sparsely recalls the Spanish Rooms possibly about Divis Street/Lower Falls.
All I remember is going there before parties and having empty catering bottles filled with cheap Scrumpy. Was there such a drink as Gayheart there for about 2/6d a glass -highly potent. Maybe some of you West Belfast guys may know of ths place. I am talking about 1968/1969.
     Anyone recall ?

1962, did my underage drinking there, three pints of scrumpy and then ran like hell for romanos dancehall before it really took effect and the bouncers turned us away, one shilling and thuppence a pint as I remember - those were the days, drunk as a skunk for 18p :)

The scrumpy was in a large glass tank with pips and stalks etc floating in it.

It had quite a kick. It was made from Armagh apples I believe and had a real appley taste.  There must be a taste for cider drinks here as Magners cider is now very popular and sold in most pubs.

In the song "The Story Of Them", Van Morrison sings the following:
"Barred from pubs, clubs and dancing halls
Made the scene at the Spanish Rooms on the Falls
And then four pints of that scrumpy was enough to have you
out of your mind, climbing up the walls, out of your mind. "

If it was'nt for venetian blinds it would be curtains for everybody!

Do any of you guys remember a pub at the corner of Smithfield called some thing like J P Conlon's?When I was nineteen I looked about  14,and went in there for a drink with a mate.I tried to act so cool and sat with a pint of Guinness just like the grown men. After a couple of forced down mouthfuls I felt queezy and knew I could never finish it. I whispered in my mate's ear a cunning plan to get out of my predicament.... he wasn't fussed on his drink either and to save face I said to the barman that we were going out to buy a paper and would be back in five for our drinks. We left never to return.I had never drunk Guinness before  .so much for being macho  [
