Does anyone remember where Hillview Street was?
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:14:57 AM »
I've been looking up my grandmother on the 1911 census and it turns out she was born in Hillview Street in Clifton Ward in North Belfast. It doesn't exist anymore (as far as I know) but can anyone tell me where exactly it was?

Hi mojo

I posted this old map on the Forum a while back, it shows Hillview Street and the surrounding area, it's from 1900. The area was demolished in the 1980's, hope this helps.

Hillview street is still there, although there are no houses on it now, just factory units. it's directly facing the top of tennent street, it runs from the crumlin rd to the oldpark rd.

Thank you to Collette and Pentio.  You are truly heroes.  Thank you Mojo for getting in there and asking before me.  I was looking for Hillview Street myself.  I was also looking for Shannon and Barrow Streets, and found them too.  :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Mermaid I was born and raised in Barrow Street. Where are you from?

I live in Canada, but my grandmother came from Belfast, and I have been trying to trace her family over there.  According to the Street Directories, one of the possible addresses for her parents in 1877 was Lower Barrow Street.

Mermaid Barrow Street is divided in Two by Shannon Street. Lower barrow street had only one side as the houses all faced the gable ends of Shannon Street, Bann Street and Foyle Street.  It ended in a large brick and stone wall that kept the riff Raff away from the good citizens of Cliftonpark Avenue

Thank you for that information headtheball.  I'm certain, that at some point that it will help me.  Not being from Belfast or knowing the area, I'm going to ask the question, and I mean no offense to anyone, but does that mean the riff raff were the people of Barrow, Shannon, Bann and Foyle Streets etc.?

Mer the people of the River Street were the riff raff LOL They were working class living in wee 'kitchen houses ( two up two down) Clirftonpark Avenue had alrge house Three stories many bedrooms reception rooms etc Many were double fronted. Hertzog the general who actually won the Six Day war and was later president of Israel was born on Cliftonpark Avenue.
