Halloween In Belfast

Who remembers this oul rhyme when knocking on doors at Halloween?  :)

Halloween's coming on and the goose is getting fat,
Would you please put a penny in the old mans hat,
If you haven't got a penny a ha'penny will do,
If you haven't got a ha'penny then god bless you and yer old man too.

Do they still sing it?   :-\

Yes, my kids still sing it and others who have already started calling here are singing it too! Good to see the traditions being kept up! :)

Welcome Jimmy, you know what? I am so sick of this freckin `Twick or Tweet` rubbish that to hear kids singing that wee song would be a breath of fresh air.

It sounds more like "Stand and Deliver"

the song is sung all over the world....unfortunately many people think that it is an American festivity or holiday but America has embraced it like many other holidays...in Oz we will hear it tonight. ;)

I had great fun in work today explaining Hallowwen to a Latvian colleague.  LOL

When I told her my Gran and now my mum baked money in an apple tart she could only think about the risk of contamination. LOL  Trying to explain about dunking for apples was even funnier.

When I sang "My Aunt Jane" she was totally scunderd and just walked off laughing.

I remember being every year scared out of my wits pending the Dreaded "All Souls Night" this is when we were told as children all the Souls not in Heaven wandered the earth for 24 hrs.  Scarey Stuff...

Then being happy when the next day came and it was "All Saints" safe again from the Scarey Souls thing for another year.

Still sticks to this day as soon as it starts to get dark at Halloween..

the holy souls walk the earth for 3 days and nights starting 2nite
so my auld granny used 2 say so 4 the next 3 days im on the vino

We used to sing that in Scotland but instead of Halloween we sang it at Christmas :)

It is a Christmas song. I remember it in an old nursery rhyme book.

What year were fireworks banned here? Grew up not having fireworks at Halloween then by the time the ban was lifted I was too old for them.  :(

must have been in the late seventies - have to say that to this day I HATE FIREWORKS - as Im writing this I can hear them - never go to firework displays - too many bad memories - be glad when its all over - we have Guy fawkes night  as well arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - Gawd Im a real boring old t*t ??? ??? ???
