New Belfast Art Gallery
« on: January 28, 2010, 05:44:10 PM »
Announcing Belfast's Newest Art Gallery.
THE STEPHEN SHAW GALLERY

A permanent collection of original watercolours of contemporary Belfast by Stephen Shaw.

Opening Monday 1st February 2010

13 Winetavern Street (above Good Vibes Records)

To launch the new Gallery is a small selection titled "A Five Minute Walk".
All paintings are based on scenes which are, or were, within a five minute walk of the door in Winetavern Street .

This is a new and innovative idea. Converting an unused room in commercial premises into a Gallery. Perhaps an idea other businesses in the City could follow? Many other shops and small businesses must have spare rooms and spaces that could be offered to Artists for studio or exhibition space. Thus increasing the cultural landscape of Belfast. A bonus for both the citizens and visitors to the City.

Mr Hooley and Good Vibes must be congratulated for their generousity and forward thinking.

The Gallery will be open during business hours and is situated on the first floor.

The content of the gallery will be changed and rotated on a regular basis to keep it fresh.

Stephen, had a look at your website, it looks great.  Really enjoyed your paintings.  Loved the car 'with one careful owner' and the doorway of St Malachy's school.  Good luck with the opening of the art gallery on Monday, hope it goes well for you.

Hi Stephen, what's the response to your new gallery been like?  Hope it's going well.  Am in Belfast next week for the first time since before Christmas.  If I get a chance, I'll call in.

Response has been very good, but they're hardly queueing round the block! Needs better publicity - and more word of mouth. Its still early days. By all means drop in - more than welcome. Sign the guest book. Tell your pals. You may even get to meet the famous Mr Hooley downstairs in his record shop.

That's the problem isnt it.  You need to be constantly promoting it, and Belfast isnt exactly bustling at the minute.  Hopefully now Spring is in the air, it might entice more people to have a wee dander in your direction. There was another girl on the site a while back, she had just opened a gallery in College Street or Place (somewhere near there).  Might be worth asking her what worked or didnt work for her.  Have you tried asking some restaurants/shops or other places to display some of your works to generate interest etc?
