Street Directories.
« on: June 13, 2006, 04:14:52 PM »
Some members own Directories of Belfast and the Province of Ulster. I will post details after checking with them.
I bought two old Spectator Directories of Bangor, Co. Down this afternoon. 1969 and 1970 - 71 If anyone requires an address in Bangor checked for these years please post a message on the board or PM me.

Do you require Street Directory look ups ???

If you wish to contact a particular person please click on their name where it appears in blue lettering.
You can also go straight from this page to the 1843, 1861 and 1880 online directories.
Queries for Mary's directories may be posted at Look-ups or posted here and when a member visits the Central Library, a Library Board HQ, Linenhall Library or PRONI they may do a look up on your behalf. Note: There is not a complete run of directories so in some cases it will be necessary to visit one of the Archives mentioned.

Christopher, I'm interested in the street directory of 1882. Would you be able to tell me is a Sloan family lived at 25 or 15 Lower Clonard St.,
Also a Phillip Donnelly living in Raglan St.,
My granny and granda Donnelly were married in St. Peters in 1886 but I've been trying to find out if my granny had a family living with her in Lower Clonard St., Would be just great if I got some info. Thanks in advance for all your help. K ;)

Hello John, That's an interesting find as my granny Elizabeth came from a large family. She had listed on her address on the marriage certificate Lower Clonard St. .but I have never been able to check that one out as correct. However a brother John Sloan might just have lived in Raglan St., As my granda Philip donnelly also lived there. BTW what's a fitter?
In 1886 tilme of marriage he was down (granda) as machinist and my granny as weaver. Thanks for that info, I 'll go right now and check that site you gave me.K :D

Hiya Kathleen,

Have I missed a message ??? Where's John's message ???
A fitter was probably a guy in either the shipyards or a linen mill who worked on the large machines. I am sure someone will post a message giving further details.

Hi
If Mary Lennon is online could she please do a lookup for me in the 1943 Belfast Directory.  I am looking for a Mrs J Jackson and a Mrs W Stevenson of Belfast.  That is all the information I have,  They were mentioned in their Aunt's Will here in New Zealand in 1943.  Aunt being Margaret Ann Watt (nee McMille(a)n formerly of Shanoeguestown in Grange of Muckamore.  Margaret Ann died in New Zealand.

In my experience, a "fitter" was a mechanic who did mechanical repairs to or installation of any machinery, such as pumps, valves, but not control valves ... they were the responsibility of the "Instrument Fitter"  , pipework, compressors, heat exchangers, cranes etc.
