oranges Adademy was a school in
Instituition Place, it was a sort of private school,
for bright kids who didn't pass or do the 11 plus
not sure if it was mixed, (boys and girls)

Google it .There are quite a lot of former students on Friends Reunited. I remember it was above the Continental entered from Chapel Lane. I think it was a sort uof commercial college for younge ladies.

Oranges Academy had two buildings ,one in Institition Place and one in Chaple Lane. It was more or less a civil service prep school. It was also a mixed school, ie. Catholics and Prostestants at both sites. girls at the Institution site , boys at the Chapel Lane, although I believe girls eventually went there too. I left in 1964 to go to Mackies to serve my time as a fitter. I'd heard when the" keek hit the fan" in 1969/1970 it was forced to close due to falling numbers of pupils.
When I went there it was owned by a family called the Colemans and had previously been owned by a man or family called Orange. Real good school enjoyed my time there, just wasnt cut out to be a pen pusher

The name was a bit insensitive given our unfortunate situation - a bit like 'No teagues need apply' :D

Oh! In the Chapel Lane section about 60% of the kids were Catholics and the Coleman family who owned it, were Catholics.

With a name like Michael Walsh you can bet your sweet life he was not of the Gaelic tradition.    Horlicks.  .

I used to be mad about a young girl (Maura) who went to it, I used to stand outside the Post Office just to see her go bye, I never had the guts to ask her out, story of my life.
