Remember the bravery and deeds of the Men & Women of the USC, RUC, RUC Reserve, the UDR, PSNI, but most of all the British Army.

Those coal men were strong, they had to fill and weigh those bags as well as load and deliver.

Once had a neighbour who had his own coal business. Strong as an ox and hands like shovels. Sadly he died from a massive heart attack, aged 49  :(

As a boy I lived near Manors Station and Oxford Street where most of Newcastle's

coal merchants were based. Yes, they were strong men (as were the bin men)

Welder, not only were these guys strong but they were also fitted with inbuilt radar, better that a Bat. For the households that did not have a back gate to the yard or garden, the Coalman had to negotiate the narrow front door and hallway, the kitchen or scullery to gain access to the coal hole or bunker. When they left you would not have known they were even in the house.
Norman Patterson was our coalman, a great guy. 👍🏼
