It's amazing how some of these photos awaken long-obscured memories. Remember the 'romance; of the docks and how even boats from England and Scotland seemed exotic. Then names like Pretoria, Reina del Mar, Reina Del Pacifico - don't know why these in particular occur - something in the sound and associations with people I remember talking about boats and ships.

I have a distant memory of my mum taking me to the docks to see my dad off on a boat to India , he worked for Mackies at that time, I was 5 or 6 at the time and remember being allowed on board to see his cabin, think the trip was about two weeks. He was allowed a phone call home every two weeks and me and my three sisters would go to my grannies house (she had a telephone) to talk with him at an appointed time, I remember the excitement we had talking to our dad who to us was the other side of the world :D  How times have changed :)
