« on: March 22, 2011, 10:37:28 AM »
Hi I used ot live in Crumlin Street in Ardoyne before they tore it down along with many others. It would be great to see some old pics of the place as my whole family (Granny, Granda, Uncles, Aunts etc etc) come from there
Cheers

Thanks Arder LAvery the ics were fantastic. The photo of Crumlin street is exactly as I remember it with the exception that there used to be an off license at the top of the street which we used to buy a bottle of sasparilla juice for 2p it looks to have been demolished in the pic
Thanks Again

Ozed, thanks for putting  my mind to rest, I mentioned that off license/shop at the top of the street and several told me there never was one.
I remember the McCruddens, I think they were twins, their family was from Crumlin St.

Also on Ardoyne.Pics there's lots of photos of Crumlin St.

My Da use to send me there to get his stout that was in the 50's.
I don't recall the name  of the off licence. I didn't like going near
Crumlin Street cause I did not want to run into Nelly McGuiness.

Poor Nelly.  My Granny gave her a pair of waterboots once and told her to mind them.  The next day Granny ran into her and asked her where her boots where.  "An [censored] stole them" she lamented.  Granny asked her where they were when they were stolen. "They were on my [censored] feet in ma bed" she cried!

My family lived in lower Butler Street - Crumlin Street was on the other side of the entry.  I remember the McNally's (I think) from Crumlin Street. What years did you live there? K

She could make sense at times. I never knew what was wrong with her.
The children would just run when they'd see her. Must have been a
horrible life for her to live. I guess that's why she'd hold unto you so you
couldn't run away.  :scratch_ones_head:

I was born in 63' and my Granny lived there then so we visited the place since I was a wee un. we then moved there in the 70's. My relations still live there....they moved to new ardoyne when they pulled the old streets down

Cheers glenb I'll have a look. Yep! there was definitely an offie at the top of the street...black wooden entrance door, then off the hallway was another door leading to the inside...dark polished wooden floor and a big wooden counter with all the bottles on a shelf at the back...the place smelled like smoke and porter....I was about 10 years old...and only went there to get booze for the folks in the street and for my wee 2p bottle of sasparilla which was my reward for going....no rules about who you sold alcohol to in those days :)

Dont remember too many from the street to be honest tboy. I remember my uncle frankie and my da playing handball against the bricked up houses in the middle of the street....and how everybody painted the outside of their house a different colour. The Star club shed was at the bottom of the street and I remember my da dragging me down there to play the tin whistle for everybody... :)
