There was a John Thompson ( with a p ) who opened the animal feed mill in the 1880's

Re Lord Cairns,definetly the same person so we now know that the picture is Hugh Cairns,thanks.
On another matter is it possible to delete photos where Ive doubled and trebled up it drives me mad when this happens and I might just delete whole lot and start again.I will perceivere for a little longer.

There were a number of then well-known and well-connected Thomsons (no 'p')  in 19th century Belfast, including William (Lord Kelvin).  I would guess that your picture is of John Thomson (Snr) whom I believe started the family banking business and who would have been a key player in Belfast's part of the industrial revolution.

That's a very impressive set of the great and good.
