In my time I can remember nothing but the Athletic Stores there. Though there are obviously business links now with SS Moore, for the Athletic Stores web address takes you to the SS Moore website.

All the recent controversy about the proposed demolition of the Athletic Stores building at 41 Queen St. talks about it being the former premises of Swanston & Bones, linen cuff and collar manufacturers.

A quick look at the 1918 street directory shows 41 Queen St being the address of WJ Turtle, linen manufacturer, a look at 1910 and 1901 shows Nicholson (Carlile) & Morrow, Manufacturers & Warehousemen.

SS Moore are at 6-10 Chichester St., a look at them in the old street directories shows a Thomas & Co, house furnishers.

However, the 1936 phone directory shows this:

The 1950, 1960 and 1970 directories show the address as 21 Wellington Place.

The 1972 directory also shows 21 Wellington Place.

The next directory I've looked at is 1975, where it is suddenly 41 Queen St.

So it looks like it moved from Weillington Place to Queen St between 72 and 75 - I wonder was it blown up?

CMcG & jmac

Many thanks for your amazing information re the Athletic stores, I was shocked to hear that the powers that be are going to demolish etc. and was carried back to when I passed my 11+ and was taken to the Athletic Stores to get a tennis raquet as a reward (most of my friends got bikes) that was back in 1961 and I have always had the picture of going to to what is now SS Moores in Chichester Street,  I suppose time can play tricks, but what is worse,my husband insists the Athletic Stores was beside C&A!!
Again many thanks

Thanks for that
Have read how a lot of people are not happy with the planning decisions.
Would still welcome recollections of our past days in Athletic Stores

Cheers

The following link perhaps solves the mystery... I wasn't far off with my "blown up" reference.
