st anthonys parish east belfast
« on: July 01, 2006, 11:53:15 AM »
while the chapel is still there st anthonys primary school in willowfield drive is gone. the parish ran from the alberbridge rd right up till clonduff estate taking in the beerbridge rd, castlereagh rd and ravenhill rd.
the parish numbers ran something like 1200 in the late 60s. the troubles put abig dent in those numbers and resulted in the boys and girls schools closing and avery small number attending mass.
thankfully numbers have raising in the last 10 years or so going to the chapel.

Here's the history of St Anthony's Schools, olelad. http://www.saintanthony.co.uk/page4.html
The site also includes a history of the Church and details of the Parish.
There's a picture of the Church on the site's homepage.

I knew a Meli from the Springfield Road in the early 1960s.  I bought his Triumph Trophy motor bike in 1962.

The chap I knew was called Massi, Maserati (?).  I don't know if he boxed.

His family had a chippy or icecream parlour on the Springfield Rd.  I forget just which but I think it was a chippy.

Les, Colette may be able to help if this guy was in business in 1969. Some chippies sell ice cream :D

I have a vague memory of being brought to a chapel on a Sunday and if that was the only Catholic one near Richardson Street that would have been it. my mum wearing a head scarf she said women had to keep their heads covered in mass when i asked one sunday.  But as i say Olelad i was only 4 or 5 when we were put out of the area.
I'll give mum a wee ring and ask her.

the chapel was badly damaged in late 72 and again in 73. for a long time i thought the chapel had closed.
it was over 30 years b4 i went back there again. the memories came flooding back.
