short strand area saul street - pics maps
« on: December 08, 2012, 06:33:44 PM »
Hello

i hope be very grateful if one of you can help me - my dad grew up on saul street in the late 50's early 60's we have come across a picture by Frankie Quinn that actually shows the outside of his house which was amazing

i am looking for some street maps (and aerial pics if possible) and as many pics as i can get from the area at the time, i have spent hours online looking for aerial pics and have found this site really useful. there was some census information of the street from 1959 but i think the name on the house may have been the owner who they rented from.

he also went to st matthew's on seaforde street so if anybody has anything of the school from back then it would be great

If anybody can help it would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hi All    Hi Shorty81

I take it that your dads name was Short.  I went to St Matthew's around this time and chummed with a guy I think his first name was Billy ??  I left Ballymcarrett 61/62 when the area I lived in was being demolished  for the building of the Holywood by-pass

I'm trying to figure out my family's history too.  I know they lived in Saul St, Vulcan St, Lowry St, that kind of area, at the time of the 1901 census.  The surname is Magee, unhelpfully.  But I am massively interested in people who knew that area, at that time.   I know that Willie John Magee sang in St Matthews choir...

Hi Shorty81 & Declan,

Welcome to the forum, my wife and her family came from the area.
Have a good look on the other boards about the Short Strand
there is a lot of stuff.

Search the Genealogy for people who lived in the streets.
                    Might find old family members.

                     Best regards,      Billy.
