Lisburn Hospitals or Homes - Unwed Mothers
« on: September 03, 2013, 09:11:01 PM »
Does anyone know of any hospitals or homes in Lisburn where unwed mothers were sent to have their babies?  Are there records of the births?  Mothers/father?

Not Lisburn info...but County Antrim...but who says that the birth necessarily had to have taken place in Lisburn,...the birth certificate should clarify that issue.

I was not, nor am I, claiming to be the font of anything, nor was I nor am I, attempting to create the impression that I was or am such.

I was merely offering some information which might, hopefully, be of some use to the original enquirer.

Which as I understand it, is the purpose and function of this particular forum.

In answer to your question, yes, all but one of those establishments has associated sources where records may be sought, and if anyone needs or needed, or wants or wanted, any further information on that topic, they only needed to ask.

Lisburn was in a different Poor Law Union to Belfast and so had itís own workhouse, with infirmary attached. So the lady might have gone there.

All the workhouse admission records for Northern Ireland are in PRONI, in Belfast. However, as has been said already, the childís birth certificate is the place to start. It will contain details of where the birth took place, as well as the motherís name and other details. If the child was illegitimate, the fatherís name will only appear if he was present at the registration and acknowledged paternity. Otherwise the space will be blank.
