Hi Catherne Mac,

Welcome to the Forum.

I'd a look at the Marley name on the Griffiths Valuation extracts which are on John Hayes www.failteromhat.com website. They appear in several counties in Ireland. If Merit and Elizabeth had other children and Michael was the youngest member of the family there might be a chance of finding where they lived prior to Armagh by having a look at school records. These sometimes mention previous schools attended by children.

If I manage to discover another method of finding where your great great grandfather and his wife lived prior to Armagh I'll post again.

There was the well known Mickey Marley of Belfast with his roundabout and an Elizabeth Marlay (I don't know where she was born) who married David La Touchť, the first governor of the Bank of Ireland, sometime around the mid 1700s. Marlay Grange was behind a large wall across the road from the front gate of St Columba's College in Co. Dublin.

Merit is properly Merideth and headstone in Drumcree reads:
ERECTED BY Merideth Marley (Leganey) in memory of his father Michael Marley who died 4th Sep 1841 aged 67 years also his mother Elizabeth who died 26th Nov 1865 aged 75 years. Patrick Breen who died 15th Nov 1951 his wife Mary Ann who died28th Jan 1969. If this helps, I might have more.

Can see them in the vicinity over a year earlier than that, they got married in Kilmore RC parish on 25 January 1856 (top of right page):

The reported age of Meredith Marley at death in 1915 and his stated age in both the 1901 and 1911 census returns place his birth c. 1831, so the following can't refer to him, but with a name like that, I imagine the following must be a relative:

Repository : Public Record Office for Northern Ireland
PRONI Reference : T577/24
Level : Item
Access : Open
Title : Meredith Marley, Armagh and Rev. Patrick
Dates : 3 August 1813
Description : Meredith Marley, Armagh and Rev. Patrick James Byrne, Armagh
Assignment of premises (Chapel Lane, Armagh)
Considn. £8.

Repository : Public Record Office for Northern Ireland
PRONI Reference : T577/21
Level : Item
Access : Open
Title : Patrick Feenan, Armagh and Meredith Marley
Dates : 28 April 1813
Description : Patrick Feenan, Armagh and Meredith Marley Armagh
Assignment of house and garden held under renewable lease. Considn. £11:7:6
Chapel Lane, Armagh

Hi Catherine, I realise itís been a good few years since you started this thread. I hope you found the information/people you were looking for, if not perhaps I can help. I myself am from portadown and am related to the Marley family (my grandmother was Marley).  As far as iím aware there has only ever been the one family with that surname in portadown. Thereís a good chance the people you are researching were my ancestors. The Marley name isnít as big in portadown as it once was but thereís still a few here. If youíd like to get in touch look for me on Facebook and Iíll be happy to help if I can.
