Head master in the star was a mr carville , lived on the cliftone ville rd. would have to be a connection there.

Hello John mc, long time no hear, lol.
You are quite correct in saying that Herbie Heggarty taught in the Star before he moved to St Malachy's as he taught my father in the former. The Mr Carville that you speak of was indeed the husband of Mrs Carville who also taught in St Malachy's. It was Mrs Creggan who lived in Newington, her husband Rory was the local milkman and they were both great Gaelgoeirs, teaching it in their spare time.
Oh for all our yesterdays.

Johnmc, what age did you stay in the Star to and did you go on to a secondary school or just straight to work when you left school?
The reason I ask is because I have a school pic of my father titled 1949 but he would have been 14 then.
Oh for all our yesterdays.

Indeed it has been several years , apalachie.
john frazer and myself sat the eleven plus from the star in, i think, 1947. The first from the Star to do that.
Both progressed to St Malachys, College .In 1946 I would have been still at the Star.
                                      Regards   johnmc
In later years I often met ''Dickie " Carville strolling down Clifton St on his way to St Patricks.

johnmc, if a boy didn't sit the 11 plus, what where his options then, did he stay at the star for a few more years or did he go to a secondary school elsewhere?  Considering that the only secondary schools for catholics in north Belfast at the time were Hardinge St and St Patrick's Donegall St.  I ask this because I know my father never attended any of these, so he must have went straight to work upon leaving school at 14.

Apalachie---indeed that was the case. When I left the Star there were quite a number of lads that carried on for some years.
And I guess the only option after that was to seek employment.
Did you get my p m?

Hello John & Apalachi....Also went to the Star and you are correct about the choice of schools,  If you passed the 11+ there was St Mary's or St Malachy's college.  Then the education directed that the Catholic church had to build secondary school however the 1st one ( Barnageeha ) wasn't funded or was funded to a small amount.  The maintenance costs and school books was for a couple of years only funded to 40%.  That is my understanding but I could be wrong? :)   After a few years then the secondary schools got increased funding and more were build around Belfast.
I'm patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it ...

Was there 1957 - 64 - Mr. Duffin - Mrs Creagan -  went on to Hardinge St.  and later St. Malachy’s College.  Excellent memories of my days there. Loved the smell of Mr. Duffin’s pipe!
