Malone Place Maternity Hospital
« on: March 20, 2014, 09:23:21 PM »
Does anyone know the history of Malone Place aternity hospital? I think it was situated on the corner of the Lisburn Road and Sandy Row. Someone said it started off as a home for unmmarried mothers in Victorian times.  I was born there in February 1954 and would love to hear from anyone who was born there around that time too.

My sister was born there on 1 January 1947, which was before the introduction on the NHS, so I think it was a private nursing home then.  Sorry I have no more information, but good luck with your search.

Ah, thanks Belfastbabe. That's a really interesting article. I liked the bit about setting 3 beds aside for married mothers. They must have been in the minority, even back then!

Luckily I remembered having read this a few years back.

I had my oldest son in Malone Place 1974, due to complications had 2nd son in the Jubilee.
In Malone your own  GP cared for you during the birth and afterwards.
It then became an Health Centre for school children.
My kids went to the dentist there.

What is it now? Is it still NHS? Maybe they have it earmarked for flats!

Yes it was Private, My mother told us it cost 4 guinea for her stay. Also she said that the top floor was for as she called it unwed Mothers. The National Health took it over in 1948

Interesting to hear it was private before 1948 as I was born there in December 1946 and lived in Roden Street until 1954. Sorry I don't have any info but nice to read some of it's history. Thanks for that.  :)
