Calling members in the New York area ...
« on: November 04, 2007, 02:20:00 PM »
The message below was forwarded by the Rotterdam Bar ...

200 Orchard

This is the New York local of Belfast born singer and songwriter, Dan Donnelly, who is a former Rotterdam barman and was the frontman of Watercress. It is owned by a consortium that included the late Denver Cochrane who was from my own hometown of Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone and who was a regular DJ in Belfast's Network Club in the 1990's. It seems this establishment has even more in common with the Rotterdam than those connections...

PLEASE EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN NEW YORK. SIGN AND REPOST

{Save one of New Yorks finest bars run by Ireland's finest boys. Possibly the greatest place on earth!}

On Wednesday 17th of October the New York State Liquor Authority denied the application to transfer the liquor license from the old Orchard Bar to 200 Orchard on the grounds that it was not in the best interests of the community. This is not an application for a new license, just a basic transfer of an existing license that has been in effect for the last 12 years. We have been open since Feb 2007, under a temp license issued by the SLA and in those 8 months we have not had one 311 complaint, no noise complaints, and have not had any fights in the bar. We have been actively supporting all of the arts in the community. A community that is being robbed of its identity by huge corporations. We ask you to sign this petition, which will be presented to the SLA, not only to support our bar but to support the survival of the Lower East Side as we know and love it.

We can save our bar!! repost as much as you can, with as many positive community comments as possible..

Thanks so much to everyone who has posted so far..your words of encouragement are   brilliant!!!!!!

we luv u
200 Orchard

Unlike Newry musician Finbar Magee, BAM and Belle Fast appear to regard this thread as a bit of a joke.

Here's Finbar's MySpace Bulletin ...

On hearing of the predicament that the 200 Orchard Bar, NY finds itself in, I'd like to say that bar is not just a place where people drink - it is a place where all members of society can mix, rub shoulders, exchange ideas (business, artistic or just have the craic), make new friends and be a focus of identity/expression. Run properly, which this one obviously was, it is a great asset to any community - on par with a church or school and less secularised.

I offer them my full support - God be with you
