Shearer family
« on: December 18, 2014, 11:08:12 PM »
I'm just starting researching my fathers side Shearer from Carnalea Street. Could someone point me in the right direction as to where to start and find records?   Many thanks.

welcome to the forum Kazzer19.  There are a number of websites that you will find most useful, however, its difficult to point you to the best one to get you started without giving us some dates.

The first to spring to mind is the 1911 census and here you will find Shearers in Carnalea, Antrim

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Duncairn/Carnalea/139812/

Take a look through the following link (on this website) as it will also give you a good idea of available websites, some free, some fee paying.

Good luck and happy hunting

From the 1943 Belfast street directory for Carnalea Street, courtesy of the Lennon Wylie website:

36. Shearer, John A., driller

http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/ccomplete1943.htm

From the 1932 directory for Carnalea Street:

29. Shearer, Wm. J., labourer

...and:

44. Shearer, J. A., driller

http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/ccomplete1932.htm

From the 1918 directory for Carnalea Street:

44. Shearer, Mrs. Ellen

http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/ccomplete1918.htm

This ties in nicely with 1911 census record previously posted, Ellen in the 1918 directory is probably the same Ellen living in no. 44 Carnalea Street in 1911, John A. in the 1943 and 1932 directories and Wm. J. in the 1932 directory are probably sons William James and John Alexander.

The couple in the 1911 census living at no. 44 Carnalea Street are James Shearer and Ellen Wallace, they got married on 13 December 1893 in St. Anne's Church of Ireland, Belfast, James' father in the church marriage record was cited as John Shearer, Ellen's father was cited as Alexander Shearer.

The church marriage and baptism records for 10 of the children are available on a pay to view basis on the Ulster Historical Foundation website (these are transcribed records, not originals):

http://www.ancestryireland.com

(The 1911 census says 11 children were born to this couple, the 10 children on the Ulster Historical Foundation website don't include Robert shown in the 1911 census record, but include an Alexander baptised  shown include an Alexander baptised in 1902.)

The civil record for the James Shearer and Ellen Wallace marriage is available here on a pay to view basis, this includes a digitised image of the actual marriage record:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

This website allows you to search for deaths over 50 years old, marriages over 75 years old and births over 100 years old, so also available are the following 11 civil birth records:

William Shearer, 11 November 1894
John Shearer, 21 April 1896
Thomas Shearer, 9 September 1897
Sarah Shearer, 27 March 1899
Robert Shearer, 5 December 1900
Alexander Shearer, 16 January 1902
Ellen Shearer, 2 April 1903
Arthur Shearer, 18 October 1904
Mary Shearer, 10 October 1906
Annie Shearer, 4 April 1908
Margaret Shearer, 24 August 1910

This website also has a death record for an Alexander Shearer on 12 August 1902 with a reported age of 0, so probably the same Alexander mentioned above (born 16 January 1902).

Given all the information posted so far (inc. the grave information), a possibility for the parents of James Shearer (Head of Family in the 1911 census record) are John Shearer and Sarah Bennett, they got married on 4 November 1870 in Saint Nicholas Church of Ireland Carrickfergus, John Shearer's father was cited as William Shearer, Sarah Bennett's father was cited as John Bennett.

The GRONI online link previously posted has a civil birth record registered in Larne for a James Shearer born on 2 April 1871, mother's maiden name Bennet.

Somebody else is interested in James Shearer:

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shearer-559

The renowned flautist James Galway lived in no. 17 Carnalea Street around the time of WW2 and there is a reference here to a Mrs Shearer up the street giving him a violin... I wonder?

Thank you for this. This is fantastic !!  I started looking yesterday and stumbled across the cemeteries. Where I found my grandmother and granddad.
My dad was William James Shearer born 1929. My granddad was John Alexander Shearer died 1955. Grandmother was Wihelmina Died 1979. My dad had brothers called John and Stanley and a sister called Wilhelmina. I only know that my dad was born in Carnalea Street. His mother moved at some point to Greenisland.  I think when they demolished carnalea street. That is all I know.
