All I know is that a Herbert Patrick McDowell was born on 24 May 1920 at 51 Lisburn Road (Belfast City Hospital today). His mother was Sadie McDowell, the informant for the civil record was a J Mahood, the child was illegitimate, his mother's address given as 12 Balmoral Street.

In the Belfast street directories, courtesy of the Lennon Wylie website, 12 Balmoral Street was listed as occupied by an Eliza McFetridge in 1918 and 1924, does McFetridge ring a bell?

A Sadie McDowell of the right age, no brother William though.

Younger brother called Herbert Alexander!  This could be promising as it shows a naming pattern.

I could only find 4 entries for a Sadie Mcdowell in the 1911 Census, none with a brother called William.

However; Sadie is a variant of Sarah. There are a lot more Sarah Mcdowells in the census.  Have you considered doing a DNA as with such little information, you may need a mixture of records and DNA to make headway.

Ive recently done my DNA and discovered that my father Herbert Patrick McDowell born in Belfast 24 May 1920 - His mother Sarah McDowell from BallyMartin, Kilkeel. He was adopted by Alice & Frank McManus and raised in Lurgan until he was 10-12yrs then came to Scotland with other members of his family. Im interested in Sarah his mother can't find any record of her marrying or a death cert. I found her on a nursing reg in the BELFAST area, on the reg her name is Sarah McDowell on one reg then Trainor nee McDowell on another. cant find any more her dob is 28 sep 1899 but that may vary lol. She was only young when she had my dad and think she must have married and had more children but no trace any help would be grateful Sarah's mum is Mary Ann and her father is William.
Thanks

Kate xx

Hi

Do you have the census records for the family, Sarah has 2 sisters and 3 brothers - and yes there is a William.

In the 1901 Census, the family are living in Ballymartin/BallyKeel

Sarah is aged 1
Mary Ellen is aged 3 (sister to Sarah)

In 1911, the family are still in BallyKeel.  Mary Anne & William Mcdowell have 6 children by this time, and all 6 are still alive (only 4 at home on the day of the census.

William (born 24 May 1904) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1904/01832/1715572.pdf
George

Mary Ellen (sister to Sarah)

Their descendents might know?
