Frank, I believe there used to be a sandy beach beside where the Short Strand is.
Strand because of the beach, Short because it was wee.
Ive been told there used to be glassworks there that took advantage of the sand.
I think Strandtown has a similar origin.
I stand to be corrected.

The Short Strand was a small stretch of sand, and used by the locals as small beach at the turn of the century, Hence the name Short Strand.

What a fascinating piece of info, I went to school at St Matthews back in 50s and never knew how it got its name.  Talking of St Matthews does anyone know if the tunnel in the chapel grounds that led to the school is still there - I expect not after all these years.

I think you are talking about the corridor that ran from the girls school to the chapel grounds. It has long been pulled down when the new school was built and the convent demolished. there used to be rumours of ghosts in that corridor.

Hi there....

does anyone know how to contact the fellow who has the "stand" in the town that sells all the photos???  I'm looking for one in particular...my husband is one of the wee boys at the very front of the photo....large group of Short Strand kiddies, taken in the late 60's early 70's....any help would be appreciated....forgot to add I'm just home to Canada from Belfast.
