VAT 19 was £7.99 a bottle in Stewarts in 1983...

Just look at them wines... Blue Nun, Mateus Rose, Goldener Oktober... probably almost the entire selection back then lol.

My late father in law used to enjoy an occasional dark rum with peppermint cordial of all things , I like dark rum but with peppermint it just tastes like cough syrup.

I asked him why such a strange mix and he told me that when he was in the Army in Hamburg in 1945 they had plenty of dark rum to drink but it was too strong to drink on its own and the only thing they had to mix it with was the local pfefferminze cordial as every other non essential food products were non existent and he just got usd to the taste.

Never realised VAT19 was a locally bottled and marketed brand... or that it had now gone.

Still have a few bottles of their spiced vanilla version left in the drinks cabinet, though. Not really my thing, but MrsN likes a wee drop every now and then. Mixes it with a dash of sugar syrup; says it tastes like dolly mixtures...

I checked the labels there now and sure enough, imported and bottled by Botl, BT12. Tesco had them on clearance around 2013, they were down to a fiver a bottle. Glad I stocked up when I did.
