I was thinking it might be the quarry up on Divis mountain.
Does anyone live near it ?

i used to live up near it  (Moyard) until we were burnt out in ' 69' . aw   :(  those were the days, i can still hear the dulcet tones of that quarry on Divis Mountain.    :'(

I was thinking it might be coming from the docks.
Down where the wind turbines are made.
I will go down near there and check it out.

Hi paddy when i read your post i thought you were joking ,,, i'm so sorry you are suffering but if you had a quiet time with the ear plugs in at least you know its not a medical problem?? ... I hope you get it sorted out soon. I had a free ear test at Boots this year my hearing is still very good thank goodness . If you feel you need to put your mind at rest I believe they are still offering free tests...best wishes

It's probably your freezer.
Possible,... but not if it was even louder in his parent's house. !

If the hum is continious 24/7 then it is most likely from a source which operates not-stop.  For instance where I live in Castlereagh PSNI main communication centre operates non-stop and they need large roof mounted air-conditioning units to keep there computers cool.  These units have large fans which emit quite a low frequency.  It took me a few years to trace the noise.  I was able to narrow down the source by listening carefully each time the wind direction changed.  When the wind was from the south-west it was quite loud but when the wind swung to the north-west the noise dropped considerably.

Air conditioning units have become more prolific in industry, offices and hotels over the past 5 years or so.
Good theory,... and if a sound is recorded it can be uploaded to and it's frequencies/sound spectrum analysed and visually displayed online in this site...

I was thinking it could be wind turbines over near the east coast of England.
There are hundreds of them all spinning at once, so if their is no wind the sound could
travel in all directions.

thehum dot info

You are not alone. Stuff You Should Know did a podcast on the phenomenon a while back - documented cases of people topping themselves because of the irritation. A small percentage of the popn can hear it. It exists but the theories of it's source range from the plausible to the ridiculous.

??? Well they certainly are known for producing noises, but there is absolutely no possibility of a noise like that travelling from the east coast of England to Belfast. !

It's not that far away.
And it's easy for the sound to travel over the flat sea.
Also there are so many in one place.

Hmmm,... slight problem with that dubious theory,... apart from the fact that the seriousness of the statement  itself is  highly suspect.

1) The east coast of England is very far away from Belfast.

2) As well as a sea,... there is a large body of land between the east coast of England and Belfast,... it's called England and Wales,... and they even have some mountains in them,... which sure aren't flat.
