Just moved into a new flat in north belfast, suffering from a continual low freq hum, quite effective at night so im sleeping in the living room where i managed to find a sweet spot and fall asleep. Using stethoscope (a thin glass works too) on wooden surfaces (doors, frames, panels, ceiling if wood)  I've listened for hours and located the hum where it gets really amplified and recorded it, normalised the sound and sent to the city council. It's a combintion of things. The hum loves wood especially wooden ceilings creates perfect conditions for vibs to travel. Unfortunately such low freq vibrations cannot be blocked by ear-plugs only mid freq everyday sounds can be, tried noise cancelling gear as well. no luck. The problem is quite common both in IRE and UK so badly constructed affordable homes. Smart meters near living areas, loose wires, exposed wires touching other things, bad or no insulation, old transformers, heat boxes, use of cheap wood, electricity theft, grow-rooms, nearby badly isolated sewer pumping stations and street lights are some of  the main triggers in this region.

Poor construction standards and a lack of enforcement of building regulations and care. I can also hear me neighbour urinating and dropping kids off at the pool, its no fun.

loud noise at night is so annoying , if it wakes me up it takes forever to get back to sleep.
