indexes at gro
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:52:52 PM »
I have just visited Belfast to go to the GRO.  They were very helpful, but the indexes for births stopped giving the mothers maiden name after 1922.  How can I tell from the lists of names which would be my family, apart from physically requesting the records to have a look, at 2.50 a look?  Is there another  way?

Jennifer,
What I have done in the past, is make a record of all the index that I am interested in, then go to the Mormons FHC in East Belfast, and check out the certificates from their records. They do not charge, but they will accept a donation.

Thanks very much for that tip, Brian.  I will certainly do it next time I come over.  I couldn't think how to get over the problem.  Any idea why they put the mother's maiden names in only for 1902 to 1922?

Jennifer,
Before you go to the FHC, check that it is open and that they will have the certificates you will be looking for.
As to te question about mothers maiden name, I have no idea.
Cheers
