Great to hear your story William Shaw - you have certainly lead a long and interesting life. I am 62 and was born in Belfast - at the age of 3 our family moved to Australia 🇦🇺 My Dad died in 1991 but Mum is still going strong and was 91 last birthday. My career was in the Qld Police Force and then moved into real estate - I have 4 daughters and 12 grandchildren. Life is great - look after yourself  ;)

Good to see another old Peeler on the forum , there’s not many of us about or at least not many who will admit to having been a Peeler  ;)

My Dad James Haire was Indentured to H & W starting in May 1936 - I have only recently come across all his old paper work. They certainly make interesting reading - his wages were 6 shillings a week for the first year. By the 5th year he was receiving 15 shillings a week. He was an electrician.

Apprenticeships would have been difficult to obtain after the depression of the 1930's, so your Dad did well to obtain one. During my time at H & W, I remember some of the old timers talking about the depression of the 1930's and the empty slipways etc. Then of course when war broke out in 1939, it was full employment and all hands to the pump. Harland & Wolff excelled itself during the war years.  :)

My Mum tells me that my Dad worked throughout the war at H & W as his position of employment qualified him in a Reserve Occupation. Even though I never spoke to Dad about his duties I am proud of his contribution.

The top photos shows Harland & Wolff`s submission for the QE2, code named Q4. The bottom picure shows John Brown & Sons winning design for the QE2. Apart from the funnel configuration there does not appear to be a lot of difference. Certainly the hull and superstructure appear to be very, very similar.   :)

Our wee shipyard to close.
They should build a bonfire inside, and they wouldn't touch it.
