« on: November 24, 2018, 07:29:43 PM »
I am looking for the Kells Family from 120 Castlereagh Road Belfast in the 1911 Census - they were a very large family and worked hard in the community. James Kells was Head of the Family! Mary Kells was His wife! I am looking for Annie Kells she was a Nurse and Married Kerr! they were Methodist who possibly went to Mountpottinger but not totally sure about that one... Any Help would be much appreciated.  ::)

Hi Teap and Seasons, I donít know what to make of Teaps important marriage find for 1913 .
Adding in your information to census produced family history
the family draft tree looks like
James Kells 52 ~1849-50  died 12th December 1905 aged 61 at 120 Castlereagh Road (note the other addresses Colette posted above were 110) son Robert also registered this death
Head of Family Methodist Co Monaghan Council Sweeper c1901  married
Mary Kells 46 ~1855-6  Wife Methodist Glenooy, Co antrim Housekeeper c1901  c1911 Widow She died 28th Janurary 1914 aged 55 from angina at 110 Castlereagh Road death registered by her son Robert.

children in 1901 quantity of children question not in use however 1911 states as 11 born, 10 living. I couldnít find the 11th. Yet 10 existed in 1901.

2. Lettie Kells 23 ~1878-9 Letitia Jane Daughter Methodist Whiteabbey, Co Antrim Linen Weaver c1901 Linen Weaver c1911 single
3. Annie Kells 21 ~1880-1 aka Elizabeth Ann Kells or another daughter perhaps a year older Daughter Methodist Whiteabbey, Co Antrim Linen Weaver c1901 in the 1911census it is Elizabeth Ann Kells Linen Weaver c1911 single to be a witness to her sister Annie she has to be a different person So my numbering is wrong below
4. James W Kells 19 ~1882-3  Son Methodist Whiteabbey, Co Antrim Apprentice Lithographer c1901
5. Robert Kells 18 ~1883-4  Son Methodist Cultra, Co Down Apprentice Druggist c1901
6. Joseph Kells 15 ~1886-7  Son Methodist Belfast Lithographer Feeder c1901
7. John Kells 13 ~1888-7  Son Methodist Belfast Scholar c1901 Colour Mixer c1911 single
8. Richard Kells 11 ~1890-1 ~1890-1 Son Methodist Belfast Scholar c1901 Artist c1911 single

      in 1911 all   c1901

      methodists   c1901

relatives in house 1901 only
John Yarr 42 ~1859-60  Brother in Law Methodist Ballinderry, Co Antrim Platers Helper c1901   Married
John Yarr 10 ~1891-2  Nephew Methodist Barrow, England Scholar c1901
Robert Yarr 9 ~1892-3  Nephew Methodist Barrow, England Scholar c1901

Regarding  property numbers used in census
Address   Apr-Mar  1901 120 in Castlereagh Road (Pottinger, Down) in 1911 39 in Castlereagh Road (Pottinger (part of), Down)

Regarding house numbers in  Street directories in Castlereagh Road source lennonwylie
1901  no Kells atall lennonwylie
1908 120. Kells, Mrs.
1910 110. Kells, Mrs. Mary
1912 110. Kells, Mrs. Mary

I suppose looking up valuation continuation books at PRONI might settle Street numbers or valuation numbers used on one occasion not on both census

So lastly is  'John Kells son of a James Kells 110 Castlereagh Road ' who does appear to be child no7 above. so surely some record is wrong or should i be tucked up in bed?

There's a birth for
William Kells 9th Nov 1893 59 Beersbridge road  father James Kells a labourer,  mother Mary Yarr. that would fit in with the Yarr visitors in the 1901 Census must be the wife's brother.

Death of William Kells 8th June 1895 from measles aged 2 and a half years, child of James Kells 59 Beersbridge road.

Teap did James Kells have a brother John a carter in census below, could the right Annie
and the right John be muddled and are first cousins.

I tried the valuation books ie https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/search-archives-online/valuation-revision-books
but I only found the odd numbers which are on the south side of the road and gave up

a Annie Kells and a John Kells their joint burial notices are listed  see http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/community/burialrecords/burialrecords.aspx
both ages are about 10 years wrong, could it be them or another of my wrong speculations/red herrings
John Kells age 76  so [ b~1897]   d 16 Dec 1973 bur Belfast City Cemetery - Glenalina Extension Last address 195 Argyle street
Annie Kells age 65 so [b~1903] [ d 24 Dec 1968 bur Belfast City Cemetery - Glenalina Extension. Last address 195 Argyle street
they are bur with a Joseph Kells  age 65 [so b~1940] d 16th Aug 2005 bur Belfast City Cemetery - Glenalina Extension. Last address Glencairn Care Centre Glencairn Rd Belfast 2634 BT13 3PU

checking backwards on street directories from http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk
1912 195. Argyle St    Kells, John, carter (Kelly, John, carter in 1910)
1924 195 Argyle St     Kellis, John, operator (Kells, John, carter in 1918)
1932 195 Argyle St     Kells, John, operator
1943 195 Argyle St     Kells, John, operator

so 1911 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Wood_Vale_Ward/Argyle_Street__Belfast_Urban_No__5_/293495/shows his family as
195 in Argyle Street (Belfast Urban No. 5) (Wood Vale Ward, Antrim)
Kells John 52 [so b~1859-60 Male Head of Family Church of Ireland Co Antrim Carter Unemployed Read and write - Married - -

Kells John 13 Male Son Church of Ireland Belfast City Scholar Read and write - Single - - - -

so 1901 census which also shows the same family another Annie Kells!http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Woodvale_Ward/Wilton_Street__part_of_/1008296/
176 in Wilton Street (part of) (Woodvale Ward, Antrim)

nearly my last effort
Seasons thanks for your message, this explains in case Annie kept her maiden name or didnít marry until late in life anyway for Nursing going back to my previous note
SCM stands for State Certified Midwife
1943  Cregagh Road    Continuation of Woodstock Road to Knockbreda Road
25. Kells, Annie, S.C.M.

Seasons you thought she married a Kerr, could it have been Kells? I looked through about 20 Annie Kerrís whose burial records at https://dof.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/burialSearch.aspx without success , have you looked at them?

going back to Colettes marriage I have added in birth years
ďAnnie's marriage to a Kells.. Turns out she was married to John Kells son of a James Kells 110 Castlereagh Road in 16th July 1913 Annie was 21 [so b~1892]  John was 26 [so born ~1887. one of the witnesses was Elizabeth Ann Kells

I thought I would continue to link up one other Kells  in case they fall into placeusing http://streetdirectories.proni.gov.uk/
Kells, J    a coachman in 1895 at 59 Beersbridge road
Kells, J    a saddler in 1895 at 19 little Patrick Street
Kells, J    a coachman in 1897 at 59 Beersbridge road
Kells, J    a saddler in 1897 at 19 little Patrick Street
Kells, J    a saddler in 1900 at 19 little Patrick Street

in 1901 census
78 in York Street (St. Anne's Ward, Antrim)
Kells  John  32  Male  Head of Family  Presbyterrian  Co Antrim  Saddler  Read and write  -  Married  -
Kells  Elizabeth  32  Female  Wife  Presbyterrian  Belfast City  -  Read and write  -  Married
children
Kells  Robert  1  Male  Son  Presbyterrian  Belfast City  -  -  -  Not Married  -

Hi JimG..

Yes! Annie Kells Married later on in life and I believe she would maybe have kept her own name.. A good point.

She did Marry a Kerr - this is stated in the PRONI records which I hold a copy of. I did check the burial records as well and had no success at all, thats why I found the forum and decided to engage here to try and get some help with this one, however, Colettes find for a Annie Kells and James Kells 110 Castlereagh road is certainly with investigating - Good find Collette.  ::) . Thanks Guys your research here is much appreciated..

Good Evening Chevron.

I've just started to go further into the Kells Family - this would be amazing if there was a connection as I'm looking to try and find any living relatives to try and find Records leading to a Mother and Baby home that was overseen by the Kells family situated 110/112 Castlereagh Road.

The family I'm looking for as JimG mentioned in his first reply are.

Its really the third Girl Annie Kells in this census I'm looking for, I've just found her marriage certificate which is on its way to me from GRONI - I'm hoping it will give a place of marriage and witnesses. Annie/Ann married late on in life to a Kerr so I doubt very much if she had any children!

Is it this family Chevron your connected to? How amazing would that be  ::)

Il'll do my very best to check out your family to see if I can get a connection with mine..

I believe Mary Edith and Lettie didn't marry so it would have to be the males in the family I need to research through.

All these girls were Nurses either working and overseeing a small Mother and baby unit on the Castlereagh Road and then a Nursing Home in Castlereagh street. Dedicated hard working young women that certainly did a great service to the community in their day..

Kind Regards
Annie
