Meehan / Wilson Family
« on: January 25, 2019, 02:11:26 PM »
Hi all, I'm hoping for some assistance in tracing my 2 x great grandparents who I know were married in St Peters in 1890. Her name was Eliza/Elizabeth Wilson and she was born in Belfast late 1860's, early 1870's. Theyre on the census in Baker st 1901 and 1911 but there's some discrepancy with age which is making it difficult for me to trace back.

Her dad was called James Wilson and he was deceased at time of her wedding.

Also,John Meehan was born in Monaghan and I'm unable to trace back on his side. His dad was Joseph and also deceased by wedding.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

John B

JCG, ages recorded on census returns are notoriously unreliable. Elizabeth Wilson married to John Meehan in St Peter's was daughter of James Wilson and there is a birth for an Eliza Wilson, daughter of James, on the irishgenealogy.ie site dated 3rd December 1867 which is consistent with the 1901 Census data. For the birth of John Meehan from Monaghan you would have to search through Monaghan church records that can be found at www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx. Good luck.

I couldn't identify a conclusive birth / baptism for Elizabeth Wilson, but it looks like her mother was also called Elizabeth...

A transcription of the St. Peter's church record of the marriage to John Meehan in 1890 identified both parents for bride and groom... this was given as James and Elizabeth Wilson in the case of the bride (no maiden name given).

Then there was the following 1897 death registration for an Eliza Wilson, the 58 year old widow of James Wilson, a hackler, the informant present at death was J. Meehan, son-in-law, of 43 Baker Street:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05858/4660407.pdf

I also wondered if James and Elizabeth Wilson maybe had a prior association with Baker Street, as there was a James Wilson of 19 Baker Street who died on 28 November 1877 and was buried at Milltown on 1 December 1877, the burial record gave his age as 45, the civil death registration described him as a 53 year old married hackler and the informant present at death was Eliza Wilson of 19 Baker Street. The street directories available on the Lennon Wylie website and the PRONI website show the following entries for Baker Street:

1868: 19. Wilson, James, flax dresser
1870: 19. Wilson, James, flax dresser
1877: 19. Wilson, James, flax dresser
1880: 60. Wilson, Elizabeth
1887: 15. Wilson, Eliza
1890: 63. Wilson, Eliza

As you know, 63 Baker Street was the residence given by Elizabeth Wilson when she married John Meehan in 1890.  And as I understand it, hackler = flax dresser.

I couldn't find a conclusive birth / baptism online for John Meehan either, but note the following. The civil registration of his marriage to Elizabeth Wilson in 1890 gave his father as Joseph Meehan.  However, the St. Peter's church record of his marriage also cited his mother... as Margaret Meehan.

In addition, note the following 2 marriages:

1. 20 year old Sarah Jane Meehan of 43 Baker Street to Robert Allen in 1889, father stated as Joseph Meehan (living), the St. Peter's Church record of the marriage identified both of her parents, namely Joseph and Margaret Meehan:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1889/10747/5919001.pdf

2. 23 year old James Meehan of 43 Baker Street to Rose Ann McGlone in 1884, father stated as Joseph Meehan, critically, the St. Mary's Church record of the marriage identified both his parents including mother's maiden name - Joseph Meehan and Margaret McKenna:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1884/10888/5976990.pdf

In relation to above, note the following 1901 census records:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Smithfield/Baker_Street/972657/ (BTW, I think Sarah J Foley's age in the original image reads 30 rather than 20)

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Smithfield/Baker_Street/972624/

Note that when John Meehan and Eliza Wilson had their daughter Margaret baptised in St. Peter's in 1892, the sponsor was a Sarah Foley.

Note also this marriage and census record:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1897/10440/5801873.pdf

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Smithfield/Baker_Street/972635/

Birth / baptism records exist for a number of children born in Belfast to parents called Joseph Meehan and Margaret McKenna, including a Sarah Jane in 1870 and a Joseph in 1872 - can provide details if required.

Note finally the following marriage on 6 May 1858 in Tydavnet RC parish Co. Monaghan, "... Josephus Meighan et Margareta McKenna ..." (right page, 3rd entry up from bottom):

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632894#page/78/mode/1up

I'm going to guess that Joseph and Margaret had several children in Co Monaghan, pre civil registration, before moving to Belfast by the mid 1860s.

Just noticed, while the record of the marriage for Sarah Jane Meehan and Robert Allen on 16 December 1889 said that the bride's father Joseph Meehan was living, the record of the marriage for John Meehan and Elizabeth Wilson just under a year later on 18 November 1890 said that the groom's father Joseph Meehan was dead.  Sure enough, Joseph Meehan died at 43 Baker Street on 14 January 1890:

The Margaret Meehan living with Sarah J Foley in the 1901 census died shortly afterwards, the death registration described her as the widow of Joseph Meehan and the informant was her son John Meehan of 43 Baker Street:

By 1911, Sarah Jane Foley was living with brother James and family:

As an aside - and further to the above marriage - I was trying to find a death of Robert Allen and subsequent marriage to a Foley to explain Sarah Jane Meehan's surname in the 1901 and 1911 census returns, in the event it looks like Robert Allen and Robert Foley were one and the same person, note his death was registered under the name Foley (the 17 Baker Street address was the residence of James Meehan):

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1896/05885/4669391.pdf

Robert was baptised in St. Peter's Belfast in September 1868 under the surname Allen, his parents recorded as George Allen (protestant) and Mary Ann Foley.  However his birth was registered for civil purposes under the surname Foley:

Would there be anyway of finding out Eliza Wilson (died 1897) wife of James Wilson's info? as in Maiden name and place of birth etc. I tried to find a marriage for a James Wilson to to an Elizabeth around 1850 ish and there's quite a few. is it entirely guess work?
