Can someone please tell me what's going on up at the Zoo?...the animals seem the be taking part in some sort of Day Release scheme, every other day one or two of them just go walkabout.  :)

Looks like inept Zoo management.  Times have changed - when I was a lad animals were kept in a caged enclosure to protect members of the public - nowadays the enclosure protects the animals from us.

I don,t like zoo,s, don,t get me wrong i know they do wonderful work on animal conservation and all that but i just don,t like to see animals caged, so i am on the critters side on this one. I think all animals should have the right to escape captivity, there should be some sort of Geneva convention type charter whereby all attempts of escape are protected and enshrined in law, they should have the right to form escape committees whereby they can dig tunnels, vault over fences, disguise themselves as zoo keepers and walk out the gates, and whats wrong with a wee bit of day release now and then, they could hire a couple of them there Belfast tour busses and take the furry inmates on a wee tour up the Shankill and down the Falls to let them see the mad house they are actually living in. That,ll cut the nonsense out of em!

Does indeed Derdrei-wish all the animals could live in their own lands in their natural
surroundings.
The days of Zoos should be well and truly over.
As a child I was taken once to Bellevue and never wanted to go again-and never did.

I know what you mean jillyfred, but zoos not only keep endangered species alive they help foster breeding programmes.

I first went to Bellevue as a kid and it felt like a visit to Aushwitz.

I last went about ten years ago and it was terrific.

Not to put anyone down, but the zoo-ologists of today seem a whole lot more caring and qualified than those of yesteryear. The fact that animals occasionally escape is maybe testament to that. Bellevue is a lovely well-run zoo imo.
Who wouldn't want to find a rare, exotic animal flexing its muscles in your garden?

Loved the day-release programme quip, Jack  :D
