PHOTO REQUEST - HOLYWOOD PRIORY GRAVESTONE
« on: April 05, 2019, 07:59:18 PM »
Could some kind fellow family historian living near to Holywood Priory Cemetery obtain for me a photo of my ancestors grave stone?
The cemeteries office told me that he is in the additional cemetery, grave number 243
I got this information from ancestryireland.com; apparently the inscription reads;

Erected by Mary Thompson, in memory of her beloved husband John S Thompson, who died 29th November 1881, aged 51 years
also her son William Henry, who died 22nd April 1880, aged 21 years
also her daughter Elizabeth M Jane, who died 12th February 1882, aged 27 years
also her daughter Mary Ellen, who died 23rd April 1884, aged 27 years
also her son Francis J, who died 19th January 1886, aged 18 years
also her son George, who died 7th March 1886, aged 21 years and 7 months
also her son Arthur, who died 4th January 1882, aged 28 years
also her son Frederick Charles, who died 4th March 1891, aged 20 years

I'd be very grateful if someone is nearby and could do this for me as I am in the south of England.  :)

Understandably worn, so as you will see in the following photos, the inscription is difficult to make out, but here goes.

Finally a rear view, with the old Priory Church ruins in the background, that will help locate it should you ever visit...

Started to work through a bit of the inscription in order to confirm that it is the right one, as you can see, it is the right folk:

I'll leave you to work out the rest yourself, lol.  :)

Hi CMcG,

Thank you so much for posting the photos of John's grave. I am delighted to have them and am just about to check the transcription I got against the close up photos. You have made my day! O0

No problem, this appears to be the wording at the end/bottom of the inscription (after the list of children):

Which presumably reads across to the following death of a widow of a coastguard in Donaghadee:

Hi CMcG,

You came up trumps again!

I had found the death notice of John in the Belfast Newsletter, which is what lead to posting the photo request. I hadn't however found the death notice for Mary, this is definitely John's wife. Is this also from the Belfast Newsletter?

Thank you again for your immense help.   :clapping:
