PURDEYSBURN HOSPITAL BELFAST
« on: May 20, 2019, 06:05:29 PM »

I never knew my GF Samuel Irvine, he died in Purdeysburn Hospital Belfast March 1940

My Father, also named Samuel never mentioned him except in in reply to my question

Father said he (my GF) was gassed and said nothing more about    him.

GF was born in 1874 so he was only 66 when he died, youngish (?)

His second wife Sarah Irvine nee McLarnon died the following year.

GF was a labourer, a Docker.

I believe it's changed its name. What kind of Hospital was Purdeysburn ?

I suspect the gas was during administration of ECT which was a new thing then ?

Thank you Moorsy, I had believed Purdeysburn was in two parts

physical and the other mental
I wrote to then a couple of years ago wanting to know why he was
in there and the cause of his death. I eventually received  a short terse
response saying Dear Sir BS Goodbye

No, I'm not kidding moorsy. I waited several weeks, maybe a couple of months before

they replied. Was less than courteous and told me nothing.

1940 was long before the internet but I'd have thought they kept records.

It's a pity, I'd have thought they would be a little more informative,

even if it couldn't alter the fact.

A couple of generations of family are buried there. Remember the village when it was very small.

I'm guessing my GF who married twice and fathered four children and was a Docker

might have suffered from severe depression due to A) the war and B) financial

problems. No welfare then. Treat by ECT only guessing  RIP

When I was a kid having to go into that hospital put the fear of God in you, mainly for Scarlet Fever and Typhoid.
