William George McCourt DOD
« on: June 13, 2019, 01:31:12 AM »
My Mum Mary who is 91 swears that her Dad's DOD is 20/02/1941 - 2 days after her 13 birthday, family search shows the 24th. Mum remembers that she visited his grave in Carnmoney Cemetery on many occasions but we are not experienced enough to locate his grave. William was born on the 20/08/1885 in Belfast to parents Mary Jane Creighton 1851 and John McCourt 1851 and married Edith Annie Miller on the 20/08/1923 (in Bottesford England) He had 4 siblings Margaret (Maggie Christina) 1979/Maud Elenor 1881/John Albert 1893 & Norman Leslie 1892. William and Edithís only child was my mum Mary 1928. Mum is so excited about all the research we are doing. We are gaining experience as we go but would love to find out anything we can about her family - many thanks Joan (Born Belfast 1956 now living in Australia)

If you look again at the 1901 and 1911 censuses, they indicate that Mary Jane (Creighton) McCourt was born c. 1850/51 in Antrim:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Duncairn_Ward/Castleton_Street/957283/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Duncairn/Castleton_Gardens/139836/

The 1878 marriage registration for John McCourt and Mary Jane Creighton showed the bride was living in Toome Co. Antrim and her father was recorded as William Creighton, ex constable, Royal Irish Constabulay.

Given that information, the following birth is interesting, it is for an Elizabeth Creighton born in 1865 to William Creighton and Ellen Lappin from Toome, the father's occupation given as 'Constabulary':
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1865/03565/2313202.pdf

I could find no further (ie. later) children for this couple.

A William Creighton from Toome died in 1889, described as a married Constabulary Pensioner, the informant was his daughter Lizzie Moore Creighton:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1889/06127/4749784.pdf

Forward 6 years to 1895, when an Elizabeth Moore Creighton married a George Nuttall in Belfast, the bride's father was given as William Creighton, ex sergeant RIC and one of the witnesses was... one Maggie Creighton McCourt (bingo!):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1895/10532/5836165.pdf

So one has to suspect that the parents of Mary Jane Creighton who married John McCourt in 1878 were William Creighton and Ellen Lappin.  William Creighton married Ellen Lappin in St. Anne's Church of Ireland Belfast on 26 November 1846, bachelor William was recorded as a sub constable in the police living in Belfast, the son of Robert Creighton, a farmer, spinster Ellen was recorded as living in Belfast and her father was given as Joseph Lappin, a farmer, the witnesses were Thomas Fleming and Robinson Lappin.

Ellen (Lappin) Creighton died in 1910, the informant for her death was her daughter E.M Nuttall with an address in Wales:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1910/05438/4521020.pdf

Ellen in the 1901 census:
