William McAdam b. 1843
« on: August 08, 2019, 04:59:23 AM »
Hello, I am researching my paternal ancestry and my gg-granfather was William McAdam b. 1843 (place simply given as "Ireland" in English records found). He married Isabella Mitchell from Kilmore, Co. Tyrone probably around the late 1860s - they had their first son (my g-grandfather) Robert McAdam born 1870. I found his birth registration record and the family were listed as living at 6, Alma Street, Belfast in 1870. William's occupation is listed as Fireman. Some time before 1877 they moved permanently to England (Hartlepool and later Sunderland where William McAdam died in 1899).

I have hit a wall trying to go back further with either William's family in the island of Ireland or Isabella's (though by 1891 Isabella's mother Elizabeth had joined the family in England where she died in 1924).

There is another William McAdam who was living in Belfast in the same period, occupation labourer. Maybe he was my ggg-grandfather?? In 1861 he lived at 63 Boundary Road. By 1868 he had moved to 123, Sandy Row. In 1877 he was listed at 99 Sandy Row but with no occupation (retired maybe?). Of course I'm assuming here that this is the same person in the three time periods and also separate from my ancestor Wm McAdam which could be mistaken.

Unfortunately I can find no other evidence/records at the moment.

If any of this rings a bell with someone please let me know, thanks very much, Kevin.

The following marriage registration shows a William McAdam marrying an Elizabeth Mitchell in St. Anne's Church of Ireland Belfast on 1 February 1868, in the circumstances, this has to be a reasonable possibility (fathers recorded as William McAdam and James Mitchell):

There is also the following marriage in December 1866 at the same church for a John Windrem and Margaret McAdam, 23 year old Margaret was recorded as a reeler in a  mill, the daughter of William McAdam, a labourer, one of the witnesses was an Isabella Mitchell who (like Elizabeth Mitchell in the previously posted 1868 marriage registration) signed the original church register with an 'X':

John and Margaret Windrim in 1901, note the visitor Jane Stewart with a birthplace of 'Cumberland':

John Windrim (widowed) in 1911, stated as 'Uncle' in the household of William John and Jane Simpson:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Ormeau/Kimberley_Street/214763/

William Simpson married Jane Stewart in 1901, Jane's father was recorded as Robert Stewart a boilermaker:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1901/10305/5751409.pdf

Note the following birth registration for a Margaret Ann Stewart in 1875 (looks like a sibling to Jane), parents given as Robert Stewart and Eliza Jane McAdam, critically, the informant's name is Margaret Windrim:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1875/03117/2143249.pdf

That reads back to this marriage in 1874 of Robert Stewart to Eliza Jane McAdam, the bride's father recorded as William McAdam, a labourer:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1874/11235/8119306.pdf

So it looks like William McAdam had at least 3 children: William junior who married Elizabeth/Isabella Mitchell; Margaret who married John Windrim; and Eliza Jane who married Robert Stewart.

Thank you many times over CMcG, a joy to see your detective work in action!

I'm new to the genealogy field and it's no doubt  instructive that I found the Wm McAdam-Eliz Mitchell 1868 marriage record a few days ago but discounted it due to: Elizabeth not Isabella; their ages given are a couple of years out in relation to the later English records. However you have shown how a more detailed and more sustained focus can succeed.

Finding the Windrim-McAdam marriage and building a trail from there looks like it has really knocked a hole in that wall I had reached if not outright demolished it!

I have just got back to the computer since my first message so i will now look in detail at what you have found.

Again, my thanks to you.
