Book recommendations for old Belfast?
« on: August 31, 2019, 03:48:43 PM »
Hi, I have been researching a branch of my family who were linen workers in West Belfast at the end of the 19th Century, and am really grateful for the photos of the old streets on this forum! I was wondering though if there are any good books you can recommend about what life was like for the linen workers in those days. So many of my family seem to have died of bronchitis and so many children died of illnesses before their first birthday, it must have been a really hard life.
The PRONI historical maps feature has helped me find streets that no longer exist, and Sebastian Graham's map of linen mills was helpful as well.
Are there any walking tours of West Belfast that talk about the old streets or about housing or the linen factories? The Ancestry search has opened a whole world to me and I'd love to know more! Thank you, B.
