Life Of Brian
« on: November 07, 2019, 10:47:36 PM »
40 years ago, as I recall, Monty Python's "Life Of Brian" was banned in most Belfast Cinemas. To watch it, I had to go to the old "Tonic" in Bangor.
It is a hugely entertaining movie and I really don't know why there was so much fuss at the time.

Tonight there was a one-off showing in Screen 1 of the Strand Arts Centre, formerly known as the Strand Cinema. The auditorium looked to be about ĺ full which I reckon was about 200 people, some of whom were seeing it for the first time.

Forty years later and it is still as funny as it was the first time around.
There was even a round of applause from the audience at the end.

I watched it in The Tonic all those years ago.  I enjoyed defying the "Devil Dodgers" protesting outside the cinema.
"He is not the Messiah.  He's a very naughty boy!"  Timeless comedy.

Weelease Wodger, I say! Have braved lines of the worst examples of Christianity in order to see 'Brian' and 'JC Superstar'. Absolutely loved both. Could never understand why people got so het up about the first; so clearly ridiculous and very funny. If anything the musical enhances or at least celebrates faith. Might even have braved the zealots to see 'Emmanuelle' but my da finding out was a different matter!

I remember back in the day the the censorship watchdog body watched Emmanuelle 13 times before deciding it was obscene and could not be shown in Belfast.  I recall pickets outside the ABC when The Exorcist was showing.   Would turn your head.

Not surprising you didn't 'get it'. Most people did, however.  :D

I can't find Pontius Pilate's friend Biggus Dickus mentioned in any historical documents.

I have to admit at first glance I read your Emmanuelle as Emmerdale and wondered just what the hell Annie Sugden and Amos Brearley had got up to  :o

Most practising Christians are tolerant and can take a joke.  If you made a movie called "Life of Abdul" you could end up getting your head cut off on YouTube.
