Ballymacarrett Family Names
« on: January 02, 2020, 10:29:17 PM »
Some of my family tree names, direct relatives and in-laws, associated with the Short Strand / Ballymacarrett includes the following: Burke, McClinton, Magee, Downes, Hamilton, Mulhall, Comiskey, Moore, Donnelly, McKinney, McCoy,  McKittrick, Kane, Shiels, O'Hale, McFall and McCann. Would love to share with others who are related in any way or who knows of any modern day connections.  My Grandmother was Lizzie Burke (Magee) who died at 55 Thompson St on St Stephen's Day, 1970. Her sister, Mary Jane Hamilton (Downes) (Magee) lived in Altcar St.

I can see a marriage of Patrick McCabe to Ellen Broderick in St. Matthew's Belfast on 20 July 1923, Patrick was recorded as a waiter living at 19 Altcar Street, the son of Henry McCabe, a labourer, Ellen was recorded as an embroiderer living at 6 Anderson Street, her father's details were not given, the witnesses were Francis McCabe and Sarah Tumelty.

That reads back to the record of a baptism which took place in St. Peter's Belfast on 18 June 1888, the record shows that a Patrick McCabe, born on 17 June 1888, was baptised for parents Harry McCabe and Brigid Gillen of 35 Scotch Street, the record was subsequently annotated to say that Patrick went on to marry:

- Agnes Fischer on 20 October 1912 in St. Matthew's Belfast; and
- Ellen Broderick on 20 July 1923 in St. Matthew's Belfast.

The civil birth registration for the Patrick McCabe who was baptised that day is free to view here:

Patrick's first marriage to Agnes Fischer is free to view here:

Patrick's parents, Henry McCabe and Bridget Gillen, married twice:

- the first time on 1 November 1884 in the Registrar's Office in Belfast, Henry was recorded as a 24 year old labourer living at 47 Divis Street, the son of Henry McCabe a baker, 22 year old Bridget was recorded as living at 3 Scotland Street, the daughter of Patrick Gillen, a labourer, the civil registration is free to view here:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1884/10914/5987405.pdf

- the second time on 24 January 1886 in St. Peter's Belfast, the church marriage record shows Henry and Bridget as living at 35 Scotch Street, Henry's parents were recorded as Henry and Catherine McCabe, Bridget's parents were recorded as Patrick and Isabella Gillen, there are comments on the marriage record to say that dispensation was sought as they were related, that the husband's parents were dead, and that the wife's parents were from County Armagh.

While the birth records for any children of Patrick McCabe and Ellen Broderick would be too recent to be available online, I can see the following childrens' births from Patrick McCabe's first marriage to Agnes Fischer:

- Albert Edward McCabe in 1912: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1912/01494/1607744.pdf

- Patrick Herbert McCabe in 1914: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1914/01405/1577971.pdf

- Hildagard McCabe in 1915: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1915/01362/1561812.pdf

- Mary Catherine McCabe born on 3 January 1919 to parents Patrick McCabe, labourer, and Agnes Fisher of 22 Stonyford Street (image not available)

The St. Matthew's Belfast baptismal record for Hildagard McCabe born in 1915 says that she was baptised as Agnes McCabe and that she went on to marry Thomas Robinson in the same church (date of marriage not recorded). The St. Matthew's Belfast baptismal record for Patrick Herbert McCabe born in 1914 says that he was baptised as Patrick Joseph McCabe.

Agnes (Fischer) McCabe died in 1920:
