Searching family tree for McColl
« on: February 26, 2020, 03:57:02 AM »
Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me research my mother's family tree. I have very little to go on, but I will share here and hope that someone can help progress my search.

This is what I  have so far:
My mother's name was Alice McColl, born in November, 1923, she lived on Methuen Street in the 1940's with her mother (name unknown), her sisters Johanna (born 1920) and Kathleen, and a brother (name also unknown).

Mom met, and eloped with, my father Gerald MacLure Graham shortly before the end of the war and came to Prince Edward Island, Canada as a War Bride in November, 1945. Her sister, Johanna also immigrated to (Montreal) Canada in 1949 along with her husband Francis (Frankie) V Lumsden and their three children, Gerald, Kathleen and Francis (Frank Jr).

I know nothing about Kathleen, other than she had married and had several children, and took care of my grandmother.  She and Granny McColl were relocated from Metheun St. to Newtownards Road when the conflict in that became extremely dangerous to residents. This would be likely in the 70's.

Mom never spoke of her childhood, or of her family, so this is proving to be really difficult to research.

I realize this is a long shot, but if any of this rings a family bell, then please reach out to me. Or, if you have suggestions on "next steps", I'd really appreciate hearing them.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Graham

I can only see one instance of that surname in the 1943 Belfast street directory listing for Methuen Street:

69. McColl, Mrs. J.

https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/mcomplete1943_b.htm

Other year listings for Methuen Street...

1918: 69. McColl, John, soldier
1924: 69. McColl, John, soldier
1932: 69. McColl, Mrs. J.
1939: 69. McColl, Mrs. J.
1951: 69. McColl, Mrs. J.
1960: 69. McColl, Mrs. J.

According to the following burial record, a John McColl of 69 Methuen Street died on 9th January 1924 (the civil death registration index says 8th January) and was buried in grave R 5 of the Belfast City Cemetery Glenalina Extension

https://dof.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialRecordDetails.aspx?RecordID=6837.1208

A Catherine Walsh is buried in the same grave:

Various newspaper references (mainly death notices) from 1915 onwards indicate that John McColl was the husband of Johanna Walsh (the Catherine Walsh in the burial record I posted was her mother) and that the couple had a number of children. But beyond that I was starting to struggle to gain more traction on them and was none the wiser as to whether they're your McColls or not...

Until the following 'in memoriam' notices for a Bobby Johnston in January 1972, which are interesting because they indicate that a Mrs McColl of 69 Methuen Street had a daughter Kathleen (McColl) Johnston, a son David McColl - brother to Kathleen (McColl) Johnston - and that there were 'Family Circle in Canada'.

So maybe relevant after all?

I think this may be the marriage in 1915 in St. Anne's Church of Ireland Belfast, recorded as John 'McCool' and Johanna Walsh:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1915/09799/5557655.pdf

A David 'McCoole' was born in 1913 to John McCoole and Johanna Walsh of 37 Methuen Street:

Johanna Lumsden and her 3 children arrived at Liverpool from Montreal in October 1954 on the S.S. Empress of France (and returned to Montreal in April 1955), there's that all important address on the passenger list against her intended destination, so confirmation that the 69 Methuen St. McColls are indeed the right folk:

Sadly, the news isn't good on David McColl/McCool, he was killed by a car in January 1974:

Here are a couple of the various death notices placed:

Don't think the conflict would have caused the move from Metheun Street to Newtownards Road in 1970s. Metheun Street was demolished in early 1970s.

Johanna McColl died in 1983 and was buried at Roselawn Cemetery (grave U 853):

In the same grave is her son-in-law 'Bobby' Johnston previously mentioned:

Tracking back Johanna... the 1915 marriage I previously posted showed her father as Patrick Walsh, a labourer. Confirmation below that her parents were Patrick and Catherine Walsh of 18 Crumlin Road, also mention of Mary, Sarah, Alice and Elizabeth Walsh:

Confirmation of sisters' names in these 1931 and 1933 death notices (note how 'Walsh' and 'Welsh' get interchanged):

For the moment, this (below) is looking like a potential 'maybe' for the Walsh family in 1901 and 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Victoria/Fox_Street/1217983/

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Victoria__part_of_/Church_Street_East/224563/

I believe the parents here may be Patrick Walsh who married Kate Feeney on 18 April 1891 in St. Matthew's RC Church Belfast, they had a daughter Johanna the previous year in Belfast:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1890/02411/1899101.pdf

And if you go looking, you'll find civil birth registrations for the other children, eg.

Mary: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1888/02519/1933716.pdf
Sarah: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1895/02208/1834064.pdf
Alice: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1898/02087/1796201.pdf

That's my best guess for now.

And likewise a guess for tracking back John McColl/McCool... the 1915 record of marriage to Johanna Walsh showed his father as Matthew McCool, a carpenter, so maybe these folk in 1901?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Ormeau/Shamrock_Street/1213234/

The parents here are Matthew McCool and Ellen H?/M?artin who married in 1887 in St. Anne's Church of Ireland:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1887/10815/5944642.pdf

They had their son John in 1890 (there are also civil birth registrations for his siblings):

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1890/02411/1899040.pdf
