Cowden family information required
« on: April 27, 2020, 11:01:10 AM »
Hi all, this is our first venture onto this forum.

The backstory is that my wife reaches her 60th birthday in June and has never know or had contact with her fathers family.

Her father was Hamilton Cowden b1921.  Who moved to the Isle of Man maybe late 30's & married her mum Joan Corkill in 1945

Beyond that she had a vague notion that her grandmother was called Catherine & she had an uncle George.   The breakthrough was finding a reference to Malcolm St.

We then found out that Hamilton travelled to the Isle of Man brother Robert, who also married a Manx lady, Joan Parry, they then returned to Belfast

I've used Ancestry.com, PRONI, newspaper archives & the LennonWyllie to build several generations family tree.

Of course records are limited, in particular after the 1911 census.  My wife believes that her father was one of 13 children but I only have records of 8.

I'm looking for any information relating to the families of William Cowden/Sarah Oswald  & Robert Cowden/Catherine Doran.

Any links to family, any human stories & maybe ultimately get to meet long lost relatives.

Thanks in advance.   Colin & Katina (nee Cowden)

Luckily, the 1897 marriage record for Robert Cowden and Catherine Doran indicates fathers with specific occupations (as opposed to just 'labourer'):
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1897/10451/5805433.pdf

A search for a Robert Cowden born c. 1877 to a father William who was a cooper by trade quickly brings back the following possibility born in June 1876 to parents William Cooper and Sarah Bell:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1876/03047/2117204.pdf

The parents marriage took place in 1871, William's surname was registered as Cowan:

She died in 1969:

Presumably this is William Cowden and Sarah Bell and family in 1901?

My initial guess (for I can't as yet see a better prospect) is that the 18 year old Catherine 'Doran' who married Robert Cowden in 1897 was the child baptised in St. Malachy's RC Church, Belfast, on 8 June 1879, as Catherine Dorrian, for parents Robert Dorrian and Margaret Thompson (left page, 21 lines down):
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633202#page/128/mode/1up

While I haven't yet found her civil birth registration, other such records for children to this couple confirm that Robert was a painter.  For example, confirmed in this son Joseph's birth record of 1876:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1876/03060/2121804.pdf

A candidate for the marriage of Robert Dorrian and Margaret Thompson is this one in the Registrar's Office at Downpatrick in 1862:

It's difficult to know what you do or don't already have, is this is the sort of thing you want, ie. can you specify in order to avoid nugatory effort for me or others?

(hopefully this will post this time, I lost 30 mins of typing as I timed out  :o )

Firstly CmcG, every piece of information is cherished and helps builds a story & family.  Please remember 48 hours ago my wife had zero knowledge of he Belfast family.  A simple card with Malcolm St. written on it opened the floodgates.

The two main reasons we're here is to i) learn the facts & ii) to hopefully make contact with the family members.

The facts are critical, as you have evidenced with the William/Sarah question.  Every public tree on Ancestry.com has Sarah Oswald as Robert Cowden's mother.  Here's why.

William Cowden (1846) x Sarah Oswald (1841) married 22nd Dec 1870 ...
William Cowan (1850) x Sarah Bell (1850) married 25th Dec 1871.      Too many coincidences & as Sarah Bell does not appear on Ancestry there is no linkage

The evidence that you've provided is documented & logical and furthermore their son Robert is listed as a Cooper on his sons marriage certificate.  The evidence is strong and based on it I hope now to create a factual tree branch rather than a false one.    That's why we're here!

What do we want to know?  i) the maximum about Hamilton Cowden's brothers & sisters and ii) as much as possible about his lineage.

Thanks again, Colin & Katrina
