Captain John Creen
« on: June 23, 2020, 03:06:47 AM »
In the 1870's 37, Brougham St (York St area) was the residence of Captain John Creen and his young family.   This master mariner died in Liverpool on 12th August 1881 aged 50.
His remains were brought home and interred in Shankhill cemetery.  Are any of his descendants around at present?
Seanog.

Good morning Sean,
I remember a man from the Docks area in Belfast, Bucky Creen, never knew his first name until I saw it on the Sailortown Facebook site. I’m nearly sure that Bucky was a docker, he lived in North Thomas St which was about 200 yards from Brougham St.
Suggest that a contact is made with the Facebook site for any living relatives.

Hope this helps 👍🏼

The Belfast And Province Of Ulster Directory 1870 has him in No 37 Brougham St

the Belfast evening telegraph 16 Aug 1881 carried a death notice but no obituary or date of death or funeral arrangements see the original at British Library Newspapers

the Liverpool Mercury 18 Aug 1861 carries the coroner’s inquests column which contains the sad entry that John Creen  a master mariner had been out of a situation for months and had become low spirited. A daughter awoke in the night, hearing a noise , awakened her mother, they found him insensible downstairs.  A fired revolver was nearby , he had a wound to the head  the verdict “committed suicide while in a state of temporary mental derangement.” see the original at British Library Newspapers

the 1881 census  1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census

i could find no trace of birth for Capt Creen other than the english census saying belfast. while hunting i tried ie, ancestryireland ie UHF, emerald ancestors, familysearch.org  i tried mariners sources without success
among the Co down sources i found Creen around the coastline with ros davies website, i found a bernard creen seaman in belfast directories/. with other queries. if the mariners association records in belfast or dublin or liverpool/birkenhead existed they should have kept something but did it survive. so i have had no luck on birth and place. the source most found by me for mariners elsewhere in the past was in islandmagee/larne area .
good luck onwards

Many thanks JimG - you are on the right trail and providing very interesting and appreciated info.
One of John Creen's daughters was registered as Mary Ann Stockdale Creen on 29/8/1871 born Brougham Street.
She died in France on 27th May 1903.
I will dig more on this family which is of immense historical interest when time allows.
Thanks again
Sean.

This John Creen   Crean on birth registration  .. was born in Edward St Belfast. 600yds from Brougham St.
His photo is available from Southampton Archives on his CR10 card.

As an aside, more than likely my ancestors and the Creens would have known each other and more than likely sailed together. They lived in the same area at the same time 👍🏼😜

NB.   You will find the Irish Marinerssite on Lennon & Wylie.... go to the links page.

Looks like my thoughts were right on the Creen family connections.  as you see from the pic below John Creen was born at 15 Garmoyle St Belfast in 1830.  I was born in Garmoyle St as well   in the same house where my seafaring ancestors lived

Garmoyle St was 200yds from Brougham St
