McConvill / McConville family in Belfast - Smithfield
« on: June 29, 2020, 05:50:31 PM »
Am researching the McConvill / McConville family in Belfast.

James McConvill (1838-1905) married Mary McCutcheon (1838-1867) in 1859.    He secondly married Mary McAtamney (1836-1910) in 1868.
James was a Furniture Dealer in Smithfield for over 40 years.  The son of James McConvill, dealer.   Buried in Milltown Cemetery.
They had the following children;

Mary (1859-?)
Thomas (1861-1935) married Mary MacDonald - Edinburgh (8 children)
Sarah (1862-1914) married Robert McAleese - Belfast - (at least one child)
Elizabeth (1864-?)
James (b.1865) married Alice Heaney (at least 4 children)
Bridget (1867-?)

Be interested to find any additional info on the family.
James - an upholsterer and French Polisher - was arrested and jailed in 1920 for 2 months for assaulting a policeman.

Thanks Jim G
These are the children I have from Sarah and James.  Thomas had nine children in Edinburgh - the eldest son was my grandfather.

Sarah McConvill (1862-1914) m. Robert McAleese (1862-1915)
   Robert McAleese (1881-)

James McConvill (1865-) m.1891 Alice Heaney
   Mary McConvill (1892- ) m.1918 John Donaghy
      Mary Donaghy (1918-)
   James McConvill (1893-)
   Hugh McConvill (1895-) m. 1920 Isabel McCandless
   Francis McConvill (1897-)

James Sr may be the James born in Edenykennedy in 1838.    His second wife Mary was born in 1836 in County Londonderry, the daughter of farmer Manus McAtamney (1807-1870) and his wife Jane, who lived in Moneystaghan Ellis.
James notes his county of birth as Armagh and his father James McConvill is also recorded as a dealer.  His father may be the man recorded in Belfast in 1852.

1852 - James McConville, Sawyer and Dealer at 5 Store Lane,
1859 - Dealer in West Street.
1861 - James McConvill, furniture dealer living at 6 Ferguson’s Court, off Smithfield, in the Belfast Street directory.
1865 – Hardware Dealer, 66 Smithfield
1867 – King Street (home)
1868 – Home in 3 King Street, Business in 64 Smithfield.
1868 – James McConvill, Dealer of Watches and Jewellery.  Importer of French, German and other foreign merchandise.   64 Smithfield & 3 King Street (home).
1870  - James McConvill,  Hardware dealer/merchant at No. 81 Smithfield.  His home residence is noted as 5 Little Victoria Street.
1877 - James McConville,  Dealer in Marquis Street.
1880 – James McConvile, Nos.33, 34 and 35 and 76 Smithfield.
1880 - Sarah McConville married Robert McAleese, a dealer, in April 1880, when Sarah, aged 17, records her address as Marquis Street.  She died in 1914.
1882 – Nos. 76 & 81 Smithfield.
1897 – Nos. 75-78 Smithfield.
1901 – 78 Smithfield

The 1901 census entry address is wrong - I have informed them.   They lived at 2 Clondara Terrace in Falls Road by 1901.
