Age to Marry
« on: July 05, 2020, 07:37:41 PM »
How old did someone need to be through the ages to be considered full age on a marriage record in Belfast.  Found a 1854 marriage record where groom is listed full age and wife a minor but no specifics. Did it vary through time?  Does anyone know?  I find some brides are older in the records then their ages but may be to get married without parental consent.

Full age was 21 and over. That didnít change till the 1960s.

I am sure some people will have lied about their age in order to get around parental consent. That didnít invalidate the marriage though.

My Mum was nineteen when she married my Dad during the war but it doesnít say minor on the marriage certificate it just says spinster.

My gran married at 17 in 1925, she told us she lied about her age to get married.
