Looking for info on my Grandmother Mary McFarland
« on: September 24, 2020, 04:05:35 PM »
Hello everyone,
I have just discovered this forum today after beginning my ancestry research a month ago and am looking for information about my paternal Grandmother Mary McFarland.

What I do know is she married my Grandad Thomas John Morgan on 12th July 1922 at St Annes Cathedral at age 21. Her address was 37 Josephine St and her father named as Andrew McFarland. The problem is I haven't been able to locate a birth certificate for her on either Groni or Irish genealogy.com.

What I did find is the 1911 census form that is possibly her family. The address on it is 35 Josephine St and the Father is Andrew McFarland who is a widower, Mary age 9, Willie, age 7 and Maggie, age 5.

I did a search of the siblings and came up with birth certificates for both naming Andrew John McFarland and Harriet Steenson as their parent's  but have had no luck in locating a marriage certificate  for Andrew or Harriet.

Any ideas on where else I can search would be greatly appreciated or alternatively, does anyone have any connection to the Mc Farland family?

Thanks so much for reading this. :)

Thank you both so much for your prompt replies and research!

I do have a lot of that information on Andrew McFarland and his siblings but I guess I still wasn't totally convinced that this was Mary McFarland's family without a birth record to help verify it.
My suspicion is now, that she was possibly born under another surname and was  Harriet Steenson's child before meeting Andrew McFarland. Having said that I did do a search on Irish Genealogy.com with the name Steenson and came up empty.

My confidence is growing that this is Mary's family as my Father, her first born, is also named Andrew John most likely after Andrew but there's a fair chance he isn't actually her birth Father.

Oh well, the mystery about her continues for now but thank you again for your fabulous assistance. With your help I have a couple more siblings of Andrew's I hadn't discovered.

Have a great day! :)

I had the same idea, that she may have been born Mary Steenson, but like you, couldn't find a birth record...

There's an unknown female born in the workhouse. Maybe the mother lied about her name.

There's no Sophia Steenson in the census records. And no Sophia steenson in birth or marriage records.

Name   UNKNOWN STEENSON mother Sophia Steenson Workhouse
Date of Birth   01 February 1902

That, too, is another scenario. Harriet was still living at home for the April 1901 census. Maybe she was kicked out of home when she became pregnant although Irish Genealogy.com show all Steenson's both as Mother's maiden name or child's surname in the search and nothing came up. It's a true maddening mystery!

Sadly, Mary's life may not have been easy as the story goes that my Grandad kicked her out after accusing her of an affair in the 1930's and I believe she was pregnant at the time. My Dad and his two siblings never heard of her again. Would love to know what became of her.

Thank you so much for your perseverance. Meanwhile, I will keep wracking my brain for another angle to search.

Hi Sam,

Yes it is. A child named Andrew John was born in 1875 and died in 1879. They named their next son born in 1880 the same name. This certainly made my research very confusing.

It was very  common to re-use a dead child’s name. They liked to keep a family name alive, literally.

I've definitely discovered that. It's given me the odd sleepless night trying to work out how there were two children with the same name in several families that I was researching!

Children were born in the workhouse regularly, it was fairly normal, nearest thing they had to a hospital.

I'm confused about the marriage. Thomas Morgan married Mary Scott on 12 Jul 1922, not Mary McFarland.

Oh yes, I thought I had included that in my original post but I hadn't. Woops!

That is another maddening mystery!  Although she's named as Mary Scott on the certificate, she has signed it as Mary McFarland and of course, named her Father as Andrew McFarland. I did do a search early in the piece for both Mary Scott and Scot but neither uncovered anything.  :(

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you! You have made my month! I've only just discovered that you can actually click on a plot number in a burial record to find all buried family members, a few days ago.

I really can't thank you enough! Amazing and very sad to think my Dad and his siblings lived in the same city and never knew she was that close.

I'll always wonder how the name, Scott came to be in that marriage certificate though.

Thank you once again, I really appreciate all your help and as I see you're almost at midnight over there, sleep well.

You're welcome. I'm in the same time zone as you. Google the address, it looks like she lived in a flat.
