« on: January 14, 2021, 08:20:42 AM »
Need help in tracing the military record for assistant surgeon G. Youell of the 54th foot regiment - dated from before and after 1854.  Some guidance appreciated.

Many thanks to Bread Basket for copy of his record.  He was at the Crimea, Gibralter and West Indies.  Very interesting.

seanog and breadbasket, You probably know it all,  however the item in the National library Dublin ‘’Commandeered premises’’ seems an earlier homestead before EW Youell to an ancestor might be relevant.

the Tithes source http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=youell&firstname=&county=&parish=&townland=&search=Search

lists just three Youell in the 26 counties
Youell   Edward   Kilcoursey   Kilbride   King's   [ie County Offaly] 1826

Youell   William   Deerparke   Lea   Queen's [ie Laois]   1825
the nearest spelling found in the 6 counties via the Irish Genealogy Hub’s indexes was

My interest in the Youell family stems from an early portable writing desk in my possession containing a brass plate with the inscription 'Surgeon Youell - 54th Regiment'.   Amongst the documents inside was a letter dated 1888 posted in Athboy County Meath by a Richard Oldum addressed to his son also named Richard Odlum in Buenos Ayres.  Richard Odlum Senior's grave is in the churchyard of Trim Cathedral.   Richard Odlum Junion married an Elizabeth Youell and they emigrated to Argentina around the time of the Dresden Affair.  I have also discovered a Richard Odlum appears appears in the register of a Belfast hotel in 1890.  Both families were Huguenots.  The Youell's were landed gentry in Portarlington and the Odlum's were major in the flour trade in New Haggard, near Trim.
Both families fell on hard times during the recession in the 1880's.
