Any other Bangor folk out there?
-
Hi there! I live in sunny Bangor!! moved here about 6 years ago, as my husband was a full time coastguard and it was close to work, love the place :D
-
Aye,Bangor born and bred. .Been here most of my life, had a short spell of living in Dunmurry but back to the fold.
-
We used to live in Dunmurry too!! in those lovely high rise flats :-[
-
I live in Bangor, centre of the universe, lived a short time in Belfast when I got married but couldn't stay away, born and bred here
-
Was in Upper Dunmurry Lane for a while, just down from Poleglass.Moved in around Xmas 79 and the sink was a solid block of ice! I always remember the army helicopters with the "Night Sun" on them, fairly lit the street up!
Of course that was in the days before mobile phones, internet access, email and bar code readers in shops etc...Didnt have a car, though the missus did,and I rode a motorbike to work.I went to work on a Kawasaki 250.Moved back to Bangor in 1981 and bought a place in Carnalea that was a tip, just had to get back to Bangor.Bangor by the sea.
-
Stop whizzing past all the people in Bangor on that bike of yours, bangorbiker 8)
Stop occasionally to tell everyone in North Down all about the Forum. We need more members.
-
Not much biking been done of late but will certainly mention the Forum.Great site!
-
On another tack....I see Crazy Prices is soon to be flattened.Has anyone got any photos of it in the early days? It was the first supermarket (with trolleys and checkouts etc..) in Ireland I believe. It was built on the site of Henderson's farm and I remember the farm house, just!Took some pics of the pub before it was flattened.Viscount of Clandeboye or the threepenny bit as it was known locally.
-
No photos no, but used to fancy one of the trolley boys, went up every Friday night just to catch a glimpse
-
Bikes don't stop in Bangor Christopher, they just keep going, have you never been on the ring road or down the sea front on a good day?
-
Always see loads of bikers down the seafront in summer.
-
It was one of those bikers near took my wing mirror off as he tried the old weaving up the middle of 2 lanes . Didnt get the car door open in time. >:(
Tho I must say most bikers are courteous drivers and they even go to the trouble of giving me a wave with thir arm up their back when I let them past. At least I think its a wave. ;)
-
Have passed bogey's car registration number on to the appropriate gang....
-
Do you 2 know each other??
-
Not very well but it was bogey who sent me the link to the forum
-
Speaking of the seafront, not bike related, whatever happened to Jerry and Julie, anybody know?
-
I think they got seperated and one of them died, not 100% sure tho but heard it somewhere
-
Here is a typical furby biker at Bangor Marina which is a well know haunt of furby freaks.
Note he is a member of the Bangor Blue furby club as by the colour of his mascot on the rear mudguard. The Bangor Blue Furby Club do not wear a furby on their helmet.
-
not far from the water there, wee nudge would have him and his furby in
-
Hey I know that guy,he never told me he was in the Blue Furby Club, guess you are bogey,I take my helmet off to you.Respect.
-
wee nudge and a wet furby.not good
-
keep those noisy machines away from our lovely seafront, and the bikes too
-
will have a word suse, wouldnt want the peace and quiet of the seafront shattered
-
oh my god, you've turned into a furbey
-
Hey tell me about it.Can hardly type never mind reach the computer
-
Who remembers the Queens cinema down the seafront? Or the flea pit as it was known locally. I went once and came out scratching the imaginary bites, can't remember what I saw, was more concerned that my mum and dad wouldn't find out I'd been there
-
Speaking of the seafront, not bike related, whatever happened to Jerry and Julie, anybody know?
I heard that they had moved to Scotland and that one had died, don't know how true that is
-
Yep the fleapit was a crummy old place, the carpets,if they were carpets, stuck to your feet but it was great value!Last film I saw there was Help. I think. The whole Queens Parade is a shambles now, sooner it is fixed up the better.Had my first ever Chinese on the parade, chicken and pineapple with fried rice, not long after I'd staggered out of the Helmsman.
-
Think it was David Essex in Stardust I saw, not sure. I never staggered out of The Helmsman.
-
Where did you drink in Bangor suse, you must have staggered at one point! Viking?
-
Many a good night was had in the Viking, used to go to parties in there when the O'Haras owned it, was the place to be seen. Went to the Helmsman many times and even in the very old days went to The Savoy, met my first serious boyfriend there. Remember my mother telling me to be careful no one put anything in my orange. ..as if. Used to go to The Windsor as well before it was all changed
-
I was there a brave few times meself and had the odd dance, very odd.Castle Arms was a favourite haunt of mine and was where I had my stag night.Ended up carrying an old rotten tree to my best man's house in Church Road/Avenue and my mate slept there by mistake while we all went on somewhere else.I think he had an incident with a Super Ser which caused him to lose most of his hair.I drank dark rum that night, never again.Sick as an old sea dog.Had a great chat with a hedge.Privet I think though might have griselina.Good hedge, still there.Am away for me dinner then see Corrie.
-
Did you dance round your handbag? Was only in the Castle Arms once that I remember. It has some pouncey name now doesn't it?
-
Not sure which bag I danced around. The Arms has some new name yes,and they cook fusion food, some change from the pies they used to do!
-
Don't think I was one of the bags you danced round (was I)? What about The Tonic? My ma's cousin was the cashier and we used to get in for nothing. Shame and disgrace when it was knocked down.
-
I would have remembered you suse, and you would have remembered my dancing,I need a big space! Have a load of slides somewhere showing the demise of the Tonic,or Odeon.Loved that cinema, got a snog in it.Have an old film reel can I rummaged from the ruins of it,the cinema, not the snog. The film was Salem's Lot.One of Stephen King's best books.
-
Many a snog I had up in the balcony with the first real love of my life. Love Salem's Lot, no matter how many times I watch, it always scares the c*** out of me. Isn't there anyone else on here remembers these things or are we the only sad gets in Bangor
-
My mates went to see an erotic dancer a bit of women wrestling type stuff in a pub in thon big main street running down the hill to the front circa 1975.
Yir dancing wummin comes out and does a bit of fire eating but set fire to her hair....hee,hee,hee,and I missed it as I was out dating a wee bird and got nowhere with her ;D
-
What pub was that G? Biker will know the answer, he seems to know all the pubs round here
-
Suse, t'was on the lhs going down the hill and about halfway down....sorry cannot remember more than that.
1974 ish we were drinking in a pub on the rhs of that street near the bottom when there was a huge BOOM. A bomb had gone off in a pub further up on the same side and on the corner of a street.Everyone paused for a second and then continued drinking. When we left, the other pub with the bomb was back in full swing. The windows were all blown out and the glass had been swept up into neat piles outside. The curtains were blowing out throught the gaps where the windows had been and it was a freezing cold wet night. There was raucous singing from the pub and it seemed to be an an attitude of "stuff the bombers, they're not ruining our Saturday night."Strange situation almost surreal and wonderful human resolve.
Used to dance in the Queen's Court Hotel and try unsuccessfully to pick up birds there.
-
I only had the one snog and I must have been rubbish as I was dumped soon after! Never saw no erotic dancers in Bangor in 75,missed them. Was only 17 then so might not have been allowed in
-
Think it was the Imperial.
-
Anyone remember an old bloke named John who used to feed the pigeons each afternoon by the McKee Clock? This would be in 1976 on my first trip back to Bangor. They used to fly from across the road and light all over him. I made friends with him and his pigeons, and his entourage of oul lads. It was a happy time.
-
Anyone from Bangor remember a boy in the early fifties ,named Jimmy Lee ?
He was swinging in an old shed, when he fell and foot went through the floor. Well, under the floor he found a box stuffed with old gold sovereigns .
He was cousin of my friend
-
susieone6
Thought I'd better move Bangor subject matter across here :P You know I think I found the duck pond I visited but it sure seems smaller now than it was, but then I was awful small as well. Bangor then was very much country and I can only recall there being a few streets :-\
Is this the Park you were thinking of ???
-
Yes Bull-ant,that is Ward park with Moira Drive just behind it.The old Tonic cinema was close by.The Ward name is associated with CastleWard near Strangford.
http://www.bangor-local.com/history.aspxhttp://
-
Just wondered what site you used for the images there Bull-ant,was it google maps? Seem very up to date.
Thanks in anticipation.

-

-
Or even better, running along the seafront wall.
-
the wall is about only thing left now
-
Aye,the running is gone too!
-

No wukkers????
That's just an aussieism using whatever they call that when you take the first letters of each word and swap them around. In this case the aussie expression is. No Wukkin Furries ;D Then we take out whatever else we can to make it quicker to say because we're so bloody lazy and we get Wukkers :D Get it ??? ;D
-
Yeah, like K'Noath.
-
AT thats grouse!!!
-
You've lost me ??? ??? ???
-
No wukkers bogey,keep up
-
Bogey, I'm lost too....those Aussies all have a criminal ancestry and are as coorse as Purdie's Oaten.

-
Bull, you lookin a thurdie yadder in the congo?
-
???
-
Bull,Kick up where your ma wouldn't kiss ;)
-
And what part of Bangor would that be?
-
I used to live in Bangor in North Wales.
Strangely enough it also had a mouldy old cinema (only one in town) with sticky carpets and equally sticky seats. I only went once, to see Pulp Fiction if I recall rightly but couldn't follow it as I was too busy wondering what the icky smell was.
Apparently there are 26 places in the world, all called Bangor. Several of them are in America I believe.
-
Bull,Kick up where your ma wouldn't kiss ;)
Why didn't you just say, a kick in the clacker ;D
-
There's a place a few hours from here called Buangor.
-
Clacker, awfy rude Bull and definitely not Ballynafeigh speak ;D
-
Hi aussie, yep the area is exactly the same now as it is in your map.Am still trying to work out where the nursery might be.Have you any more info? All you said was it was on the Bryansburn Road??
-
And aussie the PH on the map you sent means Public House.
-
Well you learn something every day. I was taken once to a pub on Bryansburn Road.
Still don't know where the nursery was. Dad's cousin in Groomsport might know. She's the last person alive I could ask. Ian at the Heritage Centre in the Castle might know. So I'll find out somehow.
-
The pub is still there, the Bryansburn Inn. I'm not far from it. ;D
Still cant figure out where the nursery might have been. Most of the houses here are well established. There was a piece of land owned by the Kirk's,a large site. It might have been there.
-
jUST HAD A BRAINWAVE. i HAVE A bANGOR MAP OF 1901, MAYBE IT'S THERE.
-
That sounds promising! Either post it to my home mail address (same one as before) or put it on the site and I'll have a look.
-
Was looking thru some old posts and found your reference to the shops on Belfast road.
I remember them all! McMillan's, Dalton's butcher, and the chippie. One of those shops is now a momumental masons. It belongs to the family who bought our house over 40 years ago.
-
(transferred from Sweet thread)
Yeah, I noticed that the old Silverstream shops were gone, and were being replaced with some hideous townhouses. So I took some photos before the damage was done. I even have some slides in storage, of the shops and the farm paddocks behind... complete with the endless blackberry walls. Speaking of burns, do you remember as far back as the little stream and the island? It got bulldozed for the ring road. Sacred territory the lot, and now it's all gone. :'(
-
Yep I remember the stream well, and the island. All replaced by houses now and the farm is gone too.I used to ride my trials bike in the back fields there.
-
Oh wow, that pic brings back lots of memories. :'(
The old white farmhouse is apparently an old folks' home now.
The houses built over the farm are hideous.
I remember when those shops were being built. I was about 5 or 6, and all the Silverstream kids would play in the deep foundations. And smoke! They'd pinch their Ma and Da's fegs and matches and all these little kids would have daily smoking soirees. Next day they'd be in the vacant block next door making mud pies.
What year was that photo taken ,and how long have you lived in Bangor?
-
Lord I cant remember when it was taken, about 1978?? I lived on the Belfast road, just down from the shops near a guy called Johnny Mills??
My best man at my wedding was Terry Gray, also of the Belfast road.
I worked in Bangor Dairies after leaving school, the chimneys are in the photo,I think!
Lived in Bangor most of my life,a short spell in Dunmurry but back to my area asap.

Did any of you Bangorians know John Mullan ???
He was active in the Ballyholme Yacht Club.
He died some years ago while still a young man.
-
Sorry Christopher, the name doesnt ring a bell with me though I am not into yachting or boating. The only name I know associated with the yacht club is Kenneth Halliwell.

Aussie, the shops at Silverstream were my stomping ground as a child, all indeed gone, the grocery shop and sweet shop both owned by Mr and Mrs Whitley who lived in the flat above, both now deceased, they did in fact own all 4 shops. The wool shop was run by Mrs Grant who was the first person I ever knew of to have a knitting machine, she too lived above the shop. More recently the grocery shop was a caravan accesory shop and the sweet shop was a video rental shop. The hairdressers relocated to Ballymaconnell Road in Ballyholme. Then came the bulldozers and another era gone.

He died some years ago while still a young man.
Only Yacht Club members I knew of where the O'Haras that owned the Royal Hotel, sorry
-
Went to school with Bill O'Hara.Never see him about Bangor tho
-
Far as I know when the hotel was sold to Paul Donegan the O'Haras moved away, they lived on Raglan Road and their house was recently for sale with planning permission for conversion to apartments
-
Good info there CJC.
Doesnt Donegan own the Windsor?? And wasnt there a Donegans pub on High Street or maybe there still is?
-
Paul Donegan took over the running of The Windsor from his father some years ago and modernised the whole place. He also owns the flats above the pub. Not sure about Donegans in High Street, maybe another member could answer that for you, probably wrong but think it is now known by another name.
-
Can anyone from Bangor help me out here, just been speaking to one of our patients and we were trying to remember the name of the barber on the Clandeboye Road, very religious wee man. Bugging me now that I can't remember.
-
Hmmm, ::)I know the barber you mean,he had photos all round the place of different hair styles. John Henry??? Robert Henry???
-
Or was his last name Roberts???
-
Thanks ArdieB, have remembered, his hame was Roy, can't get the shop name, thanks again. Never left without a gospel track
-
The 1969 Spectator Directory of Bangor's not much help ... no Henry or Roberts on Clandeboye Road.
BTW did you know William David Trimble was born in 1944 in Bangor ???
-
Thanks Christopher, the shop was known locally as "Roys", he gave up recently due to ill health and the premises is now sold. Wasn't under his ownership in 1969.
I heard that somewhere recently about William David Trimble
-
Who is William David Trimble?
-
He was the leader of the Ulster Unionist party
-
Right, just shows my blissful ignorance. Last time I was "home", my friend's husband kept stirring me with a nickname Martin McGuinness, as my surname's McGinness. Apparently he is also a politician, but I didn't know. Don't even want to know most of our own pollies.
-
Can anybody that is local to Bangor or who has been in the area recently tell me what the wooden posts at the entrance to Kilcooley Estate are for?
-
I saw them last week CJC
Five pillars of wisdom? (Ran out of timber so couldnt do 7)
No matter what they are they will be burnt to the ground on the 11th night 8)
Ardie
-
Passed them today and thought I was seeing things, must investigate
-
I thought the same last week, sculpture in Kilcooley? I hope it lasts the 12th fortnight, there is always hope
-
wouldn't said sculpture myself, 5 wooden poles. Anybody else seen them?
-
CJC
There is an article in this week's Spectator on the 5 posts at Kilcooley. The Art of Regeneration. Dont know the significance of the 5 oak posts but it's art, apparently ???
Ardie
-
wouldn't said sculpture myself, 5 wooden poles. Anybody else seen them?
I had five poles living next door in my last house. They were fairly introverted but i wouldnt go so far as to describe them as wooden so it must be someone else. ::)
-
maybe they're waiting to be carved into effigies.
-
What has happened to our lovely Bloomfields? (Not you Bloomfield) The new extension is well on the way to being finished but what have they done? Gone from lovely red brick to in your face metal cladding! Looks awful. Thought I had gone to the wrong shopping centre this morning.
-
Did any of the Bangorians on the site realise that the sea front used to be called Sandy Row?? It is now known as Queens Parade.
Ardie
-
Was just going through some old photos there and found this one.One of the few car bomb attacks in Bangor.1970's I think. The shop is still in business by the way.
Ardie
-
Bangor people, was there a branch of Robinson Cleavers in Bangor please.I remember getting a beauty of a jacket at about half price in a posh shop in Bangor when home for a hol circa 1983....shop was at the top of the main street leading down to the front.
The jacket was a sort of linen /Moygashel material and laste me for donkey's years until no longer fashionable.
-
Hi Ardie
My hubby reckons this could be 84-85 somewhere about then, he was working in Main St when they cleared it, I'm glad this is a thing of the past, do you remember having to present your handbag for inspection to the big stores in Belfast (or maybe you only use a bag at the weekends - lol just kidding) and the checkpoints going into the city, it all seems a world away now.
-

There was Gia, at the top of the Main Street opposite the post office, would closed down in the 80's I think, lovely shop it was too, not as grand as the Belfast one but nice.
-
What part of Bangor are you from Mooncoin and Ardie? I'm over off Ballycrochan, don't like this side of town but love my house and have great neighbours, house price determined the location. Hope to move eventually back to the side of the town I was brought up in.
-
Hi Moon
Your hubby could be right,I dont think I got my camera until the 80's.Yep remember the searches etc.. The bad old days are long behind us,I hope.
CJC I am in Bangor West, off the Bryansburn Road.Dont venture over to your side of town much,I keep getting lost in the Robinson Road,Bexley area.I work in Belfast so being this side of Bangor suits me well, that ring road from your side of town gets pretty bunged up in the morning.
Another pic of old Bangor enclosed.
Ardie
-
Hi,
Just thought I would say Hello. I moved from the mainland to Bangor four years ago. I love the town and the people but am not so sure about the weather.
-
Hi Jinni

Welcome to the Forum Jinni.
Don't tell me that Barry's building is still standing, guys. I've quite a lot of details about Minnie Delino who ran the arcade there as a distant relative of mine named Steve (that's a woman by the way ... Stevenson is her surname) and I are trying to solve the riddle of a book she found amongst her mother's belongings with the name of Minnie's sister Pauline marked. Steve has misplaced her book at the moment. You can read about that search on the Pauline Barry thread on the Rootschat Co. Antrim board.
I told Steve that I came across more information about Pauline Barry when I was in the Central Library a few days ago whilst I was searching for information for Val about her Dad who owned the business that built the Floral Hall at Bellevue. I was handed a book titled "Bellevue - Belfast's Mountain Playground. Things You Didn't Know or Had Forgotten" Author: Stewart McFetridge.
Pauline Barry and her sister (I'm not sure if that was Minnie as there were five sisters all together) started a specialised dancing act in 1918 and toured the British Isles. She also worked as an accompanist at the silent movies. Later she took part in a Wall of Death act both as a solo rider and also in a double act. Their father was E. Barry who for many years ran a funfair at the corner of Fisherwick Place and Grosvenor Road in Belfast.
Well during this past week I photocopied an article, written by Liam McAuley, about Barry's Amusements in Bangor which appeared in the Tele on the 24th August 1971. How many of us recall the Speedway, the Ghost Train and Barry's Ice Cream, as well as the Laughing Jolly Jack the Sailor and the Automatic, Scientific Palm Reading Machine and the Pin Up Picture Show? Ah those were the days :D Who could forget Minnie Delino? Once met ... never forgotten. She had a huge bunch of keys which hung from her belt. She was the oldest daughter of James E. Barry.
The Barrys were an English circus family who came to Ireland prior to the 1920s and ran travelling shows and seaside amusements. Minnie's husband was Jack Delino, a well known wire walker. Minnie did the wire and trapeze as well as a violin act with her sister.
Do those of you who used to visit Barry's know that at the back of their building was a small back garden in which sat an old showman's caravan with no wheels? That caravan was built in the early 1920s by Spence and Johnstone of Linenhall Street, Belfast. It was, in its day a palatial caravan.
-
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the link to the site. Yes I am Jeanette but have used a shorter name for this.
-
Hi Christopher
Nope Barry's is gone and replaced by the Marine Court Hotel. I remember Minnie well, and her huge bunch of keys with her for the machines and she wasnt afraid to give someone (I wonder who!) a good rattle with them if any bother was about.
The Speedway was my favourite part of Barry's and I can vaguely remember the caravan you mentioned. Used to play Penny Falls a lot and if you accidentally bumped into it (when she wasnt looking) you could be sure of knocking a few down.
It was a shame it went the way it did.A "mystery" fire destroyed it and it was a listed building.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/CHURCHES/A-I.htm#Bangor
If your scroll to the Methodist Church, it was built when Queens Parade was Sandy Row. Some great pictures on this site.
Love your picture of Barry's, especially the guy on the roof, what was he at?
-
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the link to the site. Yes I am Jeanette but have used a shorter name for this.
I knew rightly it was yourself, Jeanette 8)
Would one of you Bangorians know if Philip Weston is still the manager in the Marine Court Hotel ???
-
Ta for the info CJC. Very useful site there.
As for the guy in the photo I had never noticed him until you pointed it out.
Maybe he was hiding from Minnie ::)
Thanks
Ardie
-
I was just having another look at that photo Ardie, it must have been some building in its day, its a pity it went the way it did.
-
Pinching the lead off the roof more like!
Sorry Christopher, don't know, have only been in Marine Court Hotel a couple of times at seminars.

Thanks CJC re R&Cleavers in Bangor. .now trying to remember what the jacket brand was....very posh sort of linen thingy.
-
Just thinkin Gia,if it was made by Moygashel it would definitely be linen.Wouldnt have been cheap! Think the factory was in Dungannon.
Ardie
-
Aye Ardie, it wasn't quite Moygashel, will ask me mammy as she was in the outfitting trade. It wasn't cheap but was very much reduced.Buggin the heck out of me as to the brand name.
-
What about meeting up with you guys in Bangor some time ???
I'm sure Jeanette would probably like to meet you too.
-
Will sure give it some thought Chris,we certainly have a shared interest in local history.
Thanks
Ardie
-
I do my best to learn about local history throughout Northern Ireland rather than concentrate on Belfast.
BTW do you know if Walter Love ever lived in Bangor ??? He was a member of the Round Table in Bangor but I'm not sure if he lived there.
-
Thanks CJC re R&Cleavers in Bangor. .now trying to remember what the jacket brand was....very posh sort of linen thingy.
We only do posh here ;D Menswear on the 2nd floor going up, ding. .
Nice thought Christopher, wouldn't mind putting a face to all these names, Bangor has grown so much in recent years especially out this side of the town, all new developments.
-
cjc, I still haven't heard the lift attendant saying "ladies' underwear, going down "...very naughty. :-[
-
I've just got the answer to the query about Walter. I looked in the Spectator Bangor Directory and see Walter lived at Cabinhill Gardens in Belfast in the early seventies.
-
cjc, I still haven't heard the lift attendant saying "ladies' underwear, going down "...very naughty. :-[
Or even "ladies skirts going up" 8)
-
hey guys, we don't do that sort of talk here in Bangor :o
-
Have you a boat ??? You could take us from the Bangor thread to the Larne thread 8)
-
hey guys, we don't do that sort of talk here in Bangor :o
Bet they're doing more that talking about it on the Pickie Breakwater right about now!!
-
Hey Chris that was two threads in one thread there. Keep yer head down! ;D
Ardie
-
Bet they're doing more that talking about it on the Pickie Breakwater right about now!!
Your not wrong there Acheux
-
I hope they all use protection, bit cold out tonight. :-X
-
"BTW do you know if Walter Love ever lived in Bangor"
SFAIK, he lived in the house at Ballyholme that is on the shore side of Ballyholme Esplanade, just after the grassy area and overlooking the beach.
I used to play football with him at Cabinhill Park/Gardens in the 1950s.
-
Slightly off the Bangor thread, but have you visited Nelson's boatyard in Donaghadee Les?.
I remember bumping into Walter Love as I hurried out of a shop at the bottom of the Ormeau Road in the early seventies. . I recognised the face and couldn't put a name to it.....I gave him a huge greeting and he was bemused...about ten minutes later I realised it was Walter Love and was mortified to the onion.Good to hear from you again Les.

What "boatyard" G? There's the marina between the pier and the Commons, but no other boatyard that I know of.
That area is very disrupted at the moment with the excavations for the new sewerage system. The people in the new £500,000+ homes opposite aren't too pleased.
-
Les, I googled life boats for sale and came up wih a site called Nelson's boats....they do Copeland Island trips etc. Interesting site.
-
G, I don't know where "Nelson's Boatyard" is. There's nothing on the seafront, apart from a slipway, opposite what was the Dunallen Hotel and is now an apartment development, used by the Yacht Club.
There is a chalkboard sign on the pier that advertises trips to the Copelands, but I have never seen any sort of activity, queue or rush to get there.
-
Nelson's used to be on the right as you came into the Dee. There were all manner of boats sitting on the hard. There were also some futher vessels lying just off to the right at the end of the pier.
Nelson's were well known, but if I'm not mistaken have gone into a bit of decline over the last few years. May be wrong, so don't quote me!!
-
"Nelsons" own the Old Moat Inn, and their name is still well known in the town, but there's no boat yard "on the right as you came into the Dee". It's all housing.
I used to know a Jim Nelson, who was a deepsea tanker Captain and lived in a bungalow on the road that runs parallel to the Commons path. Sadly he died a couple of years ago.
-
Les,ta, the site is good though and gives details of ex RNLI boats for sale. I thought the non existant yard would be where the marina is beyond the old railway station towards the old ("quarry") harbour.
-
Hi there Les.
There did used to be an old building on the right as you came into Donaghadee from Bangor - old stone with alot of outbuildings. There were old lifeboats clearly visible from the road. This site could very well be housing now - as with everything, time and tide wait for no man!! I honestly don't know if that was part of Nelson's, but was always told that was part of their yard.
They did also used to have boats up on the hard just as you come to the start of the pier. If you went right - just past the RNLI office, there were definately boats their with Quinten Nelson's details.
As their site says, they have been operating from Dee for 60 years!!
Best Wishes,
Acheux.
-
Quinten Nelson is the site I consulted Acheux and just thought there was a yard in the Dee.Was in the Dee last November briefly but had not time to look before it got dark. Les is the man on the ground and is no doubt correct.
-
Sure G. Not got any dispute with what Les says. I'm going back about 2 years or so. Don't recall seeing that 'building on the right' last time I was down. Do recall making a mental note that new housing had appeared on that site.
Must rememember to ask some of my the other Coastguards on what happened to the site - or have a wee look, just out of curiosity - next time we're down that way!!
Was there any address on the site?
Best Wishes,
Acheux.
-
Couldn't find an address on the site Acheux, but there is an e-mail for Quentin Nelson....the Nelsons served the Donaghadee life boat well.G'nite, G.
-
From Warren Road/New Road junction to The Pier, along the sea front, is housing, fish and chips, RNLI, two pubs, a social club, a bookie's and a couple of shops.
If you turn right at the end, and head towards The Commons, there is a large parking area, the Civic Recycling Depot/Dump, the bus station, the Marina/Quarry hole with boat parking on the land, the excavations for the sewage tank and The Commons.
If you LOOK HERE (http://www.donaghadeerotary.org/about_donaghadee.htm), you can see the area quite well.
I was told just last Wednesday that the children's paddling pool is to be filled in and turned into a parking area, and the swings, slide and roundabouts in The Commons have all been removed.
-
Cheers Les, I was wrongly under the impression that Nelson's boat yard was at the Quarry Hole and beside the Marina..
Great site provided by Rotary. We used to play putting at the Commons and tennis.
In my early twenties I would pitch a tent just past the Quarry going towards the Commons and have a grand weekend with evening visits to Grace Neill's.We arrived late one Friday evening, stowed the tent in a boat and headed for Grace Neill's. No way were we going to pitch a tent in the dark after an evening in the pub. .rolled out tent and we used it as a massive waterproof banket.....woke up refreshed under a sunny sky....marvellous.
-
That is one good pub.
-
Hi Oz, you are dead right.I spent many a great evening there, guitars and a big sing song with old guys coming in and reciting funny poems....craic at its best.
-
Hi folks. Just had a read through the thread here as my other half's from Bangor. I asked him about Jerry and Julie and he remembers them very fondly, said something about Julie being Scottish.
I know Quinton Nelson , been on one of his lifeboats for a wee sail and he's a great guy.
-
Hi Debi
I remember Jerry and Julie alright, whatever happened to them, I heard they ended up in Scotland but don't know whether its true or not.
-
I asked himself if he remembered them and this big smile came over his face, he's no idea what became of them , but remembered that Jerry had been a teacher when him & Julie met. Julie was Scottish so there could be truth in the rumour that they went to Scotland. He remembers a lot of the faces from then as his family had a shop in the town. I asked another mate there now on the phone and he heard they're both passed away.

Welcome to the Forum, Duffy. Would you be kind enough to spread the word about this site to your Norn Iron friends. A letter mentioning the site was published in the Mourne Observer yesterday. We won't object if you are able to get a letter onto the letters page in your local paper in England telling Belfast and Norn Iron people in your area about the Forum. Letters to the press are free 8) There's just the little problem of making them sufficiently interesting so that the Editor includes them.
-
Hi Duffy and welcome to the forum, there are a few people from Bangor on here, hope to see you posting.
-
Hi Duffy, I went to primary school in Bangor with a Marion Duffy, is she one of yours?
-
Hi Aussietrekker
No I am not related to Marion Duffy. Duffy is my nickname. BTW what schools did you go to.
This is a great topic as I have seen some of the pics posted on here and I remember the scenes so well. A lot of the place mentioned I have been to in my wild and misspent youth. I remember The Savoy, Queen's Court. Helmsman, Wolsey,s when it was the Trident and before that the International. All the old pubs, clubs and dancehalls (discos). I worked in the Royal part time years ago and I remember Donny the assistant chef.
Oh Happy Days.
Jerry and Julie what characters.
Well I hope to get to know everyone well and reminise about our hometown. :)
-
Now living in Castlereagh but brought up in Silverstream Bangor. Went to Clandeboye Primary and BGS but turned out normal.
Still a biker of sorts at age 48 and I remember the Paddock at the pier, the Tonic, the Trident (before the Wolseys bought Bangor) and Minnie Deleno with her big bunch of keys in Barry's.
The Queen's cinema and the free Saturday tickets sent to the schools where we had a riot at the matinees. The poor staff! Once the film broke down and no one appeared to be there to fix it. Nothing happened so we just played in the dark.
Nice to hear you all out there!
-
Hi gthomp045.
Funny how all those places you mentioned come flooding back. If you went to Clandeboye you might remember some oul pupils. The Lightbodys from Whitehill, McDowell, Ricky Flood, and the Miskellys. I remember quite a few from BGS as well, altho being female obviously I didn't go there.
I remember Bill Wolsey when he was at Ballyholme PS. His da was the Town Clerk if I recall.
Chat soon
-
Hi Duffy, I only went to St. Comgall's as my family moved to Australia when I was 9. I went to high school in Melbourne.
Hi Gthomp, I also lived in Silverstream, (Park) and there was another girl on the forum from Silverstream Crescent. She dropped lots of names that I remembered, even after 40+ years. I knew most of the Silverstream kids who went to Clandeboye, did many of them go to BGS?
-
I meet lods of people in Scotland who had coach holidays to N.I. before "the troubles"...they mostly stayed at the Savoy and loved it. They speak of an evening entertainer but can never remember the name.
-
Hi there Duffy & Gthomp045.
Just a blow-in, living off the Newtownards Road, (Belfast B&B), but welcome to the forum.
Take it easy,
Acheux.

Hi folks
Just read the latest posts. If I put all the names of folks I remember from Bangor it would probably fill a dozen pages. I have loads of memories of places that I haven't seen mentioned here such as the Duckpond, Cloud Nine, the Rave Cave and The Electric Honeypot. Names that stand out in my memory are Machine Gun Massey and the Wild Bunch. Now I wonder if anyone on this thread will remember them. Suffice to say I am not a young thing anymore and if anyone remembers what I have just mentioned then they will calculate I am over 50 (not that much over 50).
It is nice to log here and hear all the oul memories. I hope to chat soon.

Does anyone recall Mrs Hazel Bradford, the Mayor of Bangor, opening the North Down Heritage Centre in 1984? The Bell, (http://www.northdown.gov.uk/heritage/bell.pdf) the Jornal of the North Doen Heritage Centre, contains interesting articles about the area.

Here's a link about the Port of Bangor, (http://www.merseyshipping.co.uk/features/bangor/bangor.htm) Co. Down for people who do not know this part of the world.
-
Thank you for that Chris. As you know I am a Bangor person but only new to it.

Rose Neill, (http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/bbcnewsline/biogs/rose.shtml) a BBC presenter who worked for UTV from 1977 was invited to join the BBC in 1985 as a newsreader and anchor on its main evening bulletin "Inside Ulster" and its other news bulletins, was born in Newtownards, brought up in Bangor and educated at Mount School in York.
Another well known person with a Bangor connection is the author now known as Bateman who has written many books as Colin Bateman. (http://www.northernshow.biz/colin_bateman.htm) Like Rose Neill, Bateman was born in Newtownards but as he says he quickly escaped to Bangor. He was educated at Ballyholme Primary School and Bangor Grammar School. In 1979, when he left school he joined the staff of the County Down Spectator as a cub reporter.

Here's a link to a couple of Alistair Johnston's photographs of the MV Balmoral, (http://www.btinternet.com/~Paddlers/MVBalmoral/articles/2003/030605/index.htm) which was operated by Waverley Excursions Limited, leaving Bangor Marina on the morning of 5th June 2003. I've also spotted a link to Bangor Market. (http://www.northdown.gov.uk/news_detail.asp?id=74&area=4&aName=council)

Sorry about that ... I was rudely interrupted by this silly ten minute modifying rule ... Bangor Market first operated at Castle Square in 1924.
-
Hi Jinni, welcome from another Bangor person.
-
Thank you Aussietrekker. I have been on the Forum before but then lost my link to it. Anyway I am back although I feel a bit of an outsider as I cannot contribute to any memories etc yet.

Hello!
I was hopoing that someone out there might be able to help me find a photo of Queens Parade or the seafront from the 1980s. It will be used as a flier for a play I'm working on- it will be on in London at the beginning of April. I probably can;t pay you for it, but can arrange for wine or a charity donation?
Thanks
CSB

If you Google "Queen's Parade Bangor", then select "Images", there is a good selection of photographs.
