Hi Shazza
My Gran lived in Disraeli Street, (No. 58 I think) in the 1960's & 70's before she died - Mrs Emily Thompson. Could you look to see if she lived there in 1959 and if my grandad lived there at that time, also. They separated and divorced but I don't know when that event took place. :( ???
Hi Shazza
My gran (Emily Thompson) was married to Brice (sometimes spelt Bryce) Thompson and I don't know where she lived before Disraeli Street, sorry. :(

hiya do you have anything in the directory for downshire park centra, north and south many thanks
Not at all - I'm happy if it's of use to anyone.
I WAS thinking about you today. My husband is going to buy me a digital camera for my birthday. I had a look in PC World, Currys and Boots. There was a Sony one that I liked. I would imagine that they're are all quite similar and it's probably down to personal choice, but do you have any advice. I love your photos - is yours just a point and shoot camera? I havent been working for the last few months, and I've put on some weight because I've been sitting around; I thought it might be an incentive to go out walking if I take photos like you do. I've got an appt at the city hospital tomorrow so I think I'll call into Belfast and buy the camera.
HELLO,SHAZZA, could you have a crack at this one for me please. artillery st, i hope i have spelled it right, its off north queens, st... take care. regards,...delane. x
Hi Shazza,
My Fathers side are from Liffey St, Manor St, Nore St, my Aunt had a shop there in Manor Street her name was Dolly Hagan. Her Daughter Irene had a Hairdresser's shop as well. They all moved to Canada years ago.
Erin.
Shazza...could you check 22 Sheridan Street for me when you've got a minute??
Cheers
Shazza,
Could you check 121 Church Street East when you have a moment.
It should be a Lucy Thompson.
Thanks - Jen
Hi Shazza
If you dont mind could you list the New Lodge rd no.65 also Edward Street please, thanks in advance
Shazza, if it's not too much trouble could you please send me the full street listings for Nore St, Liffey Street and Vulcan Street if you have time at some point. I would really appreciate it.
Erin.
Shazza - When did these street directories come into being?
Thankyou so much for all your work - much appreciated, Shazza - That list there - it seems to have only a few houses in Downpatrick St and also Meekon St yet they were full streets ??? I mean, is that the lot now? :-\
Do you have Avoniel Rd?
ALL those houses are in MERSEY STREET.[ Ahh - understand now O0 and it makes sense :-[ i even recognize lots of names and the grocers and confectioners shops - those streets always seemed to have the same family names down the years.I know for fact, my parents will recognize most if not all of the list. I'd love the streets off Mersey Street - pleaseeeeeeeeee? :-* :D
When the directory says 'here is such and such a street' I think it is just showing that there is a break or junction at Mersey Street.
Do you want all of the streets mentioned in the Mersey Street post?
Downpatrick Street
Oval Street
Meeken Street
Yukon Street
Armitage Street
Banbury Street
Redcliffe Parade
Redcliffe Street
and do you want all the Parkgate ones as well
Parkgate Drive, Crescent, Parade and Gardens?
Ok, I'll see what I can do. :-*
121 THOMPSON, Mrs Lucinda

millview
Aww Shazza - Thankyou! :-*
I'll have a look tonight Kate. Hope all is well with you. :-*Yes Shazza - all is well. How are you feeling?? K
Shazza - I know you are busy with your wonderful pictures - they are beautiful by the way. When you get a minute, can you look up Chatham Street? My cousins are debating who the neighbors were.
Hi Shazza, I've been checking out the forum and your fame with street directory details are now legendary! Could I be so bold as to ask for the list of folks in Wesley Street [near Sandy Row] please? I know there were some homes here bombed during the blitz but I have a vague memory of visiting me Nanny Russell when I was quite young - she took us to Woolworth's? and bought me a donald duck glove puppet, there was hessian covered scaffolding around the outside of the building and the steps into the building were all uneven, oh and I think we got there by tram? I think this would have been around late 50's early 60's any info would be helpful as I'm trying to work out when this would have happened. [and also how reliable [or not!] my memory is!
Hope this aids the memories :)Thank you so much Shazza - reallly appreciate it. Will think of you tomorrow. Good Luck and God Bless. K

I've been conducting a genealogical investigation into my friend's family tree, and moments ago I stumbled upon your 1959 Belfast Street Directory for Redcliffe Parade (all this time, I've been doing my research using 'street' and/or 'drive') and lo and behold, there is the McMurray listing I've been seeking for 7 months now:
23 SLATER R, butcher
25 MURRAY, Mrs Kathleen
27 WILTON W, painter
29 McMURRAY John, labourer
31 MacDONALD William, moulder

John and Charlotte McMurray undertook the care and raising of my friend John Dixon as a wee lad, and this is the FIRST tangible evidence I have of this.
Mere "thanks" can never express my gratitude.

Aww i've just remembered - 1959 was the year he died :(
Shazza,
Hope you are well today. Did you go swimming?
I was wondering if you could do a street lookup for me. I forget what years you have.
I'm looking for:
Michael Miles James Curran married Flop Smyth (physician) in 1953.
Was wondering where they lived.
Also is there any way of finding out more about Michael Miles James Curran Re: Mother, Father, etc.
Thanks so much.
could you look up whiterock parade for me
Hi Maureen. I'm feeling great thanks. Yes, I was swimming on Monday, and again this morning - absolute heaven! Then I go for a cup of coffee and to read the paper in a local cafe. Thanks Shazza for your time. I really appreciate it. Hopefully someone else will come up with something. Ourjoe helped me before, so hopefully he'll read my latest request. It is raining again today here.
There is nothing in the 1959 directory that I can find, that is of interest to you regarding the above. Hopefully someone else on the forum will be able to help you. Ourjoe perhaps, or there are a few others (cant remember who they are) who are good at sourcing information. Hope all is well with you, and you're not missing Val too much on the Canada thread. I think you have your hands full this week looking after your grandson.

Hi Shazza, I am looking for Garton Way in the Whitecity Estate Belfast. Would that be in your directory? If not how would I find out. Many thanks. Floral
Floral, I'm not really sure exactly what it is you would like.. I dont know the White City area at all, but if you would like to look up more streets, just give me the names and I'll see what I can do. Or is it a map of the area you're after?
I just noticed there is a thread on the Belfast Forum about the White City - you might find something of interest on it.

Hi Shazza,
How are you doing in Banbridge this fine day in Canada?
I was wondering if in your 1959 directory you could look up:
Deramore Park, Belfast
I'm looking to see if any Currans lived there around that time.
You've always been a great help to me, thanking you again.
Hi Maureen, it's a beautiful day in sunny Banbridge - life is good!Yes it is Shazza, you did it again. Thanks. Mcnamee your right it is the judge whose daughter was murdered. I think I told you I know a girl in California whose doing her genealogy and they are related to her. I am helping her out. I read in her info that they moved to Deramore park shortly after patricia's murder. So I was looking for the #. Do you know if those houses still exist? Many thanks to all. Maureen
DERAMORE PARK
19 CURRAN, The Right Hon Lord Justice
is this who you're looking for?
Let me know if you'd like any other info.
Shazza - would you have a 1971 street directory for pottinger district of belfast.
My late father had an old friend who lived there by the name of Harrison - not sure of his first name.
Iam not sure Maureen, but think they may well do. It is a lovely area. Thanks McNamee. I think they might be also. I know that area is lovely. I've been up and down the Malone Rd. many times but do not remember Deramore Park. I guess it will be one of the places i'll have to go to on my next visit to Belfast.
Yes it is Shazza, you did it again. Maureen
Are we all sure we are all talking about the same man ??? ??? :-\As far as I know. Why, do you think otherwise?
Sorry Maureen I am thinking of another guy. Not the Judge Curran that you are referring to.you're right they did live there but after Patricia's death they moved to Deramore Park. If you see where Shazza posted a couple of replys up you will notice the address #19 Deramore Park. the right honorable justice curran.
I don't think your Judge lived in Deramore. Now I could be wrong or just mixed up. :-\
He lived around Whiteabbey in what became a Hotel. In face just ignore me I will keep taking the tablets. :D
Well then who was the guy (I think he was also a judge) who's young daughter was shot coming out of the chapel at Deramore?Never heard of that one. Maybe someone over there can help you? Have you got anymore information like when?
Yes Maureen some of them came over from Halifax. What a trip. ;)Forever and ever! ha, ha
I would love to take a boat to Australia, wonder how long it would take?
My family come from East Belfast, I know that my grandparents lived at 30 Josephine street off the Newtownards road, does your directory have a list of all residents on the street in 1959, looking to trace several whom I believe were living there at the time

If it wouldn't be too much trouble...can you do a lookup for the surname "Harvey" on Cusak, or maybe it's spelled Cussick (I'm not sure which), Street? The given name may be variously Ruth, or Mavis, or their parents, whose names I do not know. Thanks, in advance, for your efforts.

Can you just confirm for me that the entry you found for Jas Nummy at 11 Havelock Street, was indeed the 1959 directory or was it 1951 as stated in your post, the dates are crucial to my research as I have found that this family did relocate to Newry, Mrs Nummy's hometown, and the dates will narrow the searching timewindow of the ocurences of their deaths. Sorry to be a nuisance. Sean TT

I would be grateful if anyone could look up 47 Jameson Street, looking for a Jean or Harry Jones and I know they were living there in 1956
Much appreciated if anyone has a street directory for Tates Avenue in the late 1940's to the 1958 or so thanks in advance Morton
I would love a copy of Cliftondene Crescent if possible.. Thank you.
Shazza would you happen to have a copy of the 1959 Belfast directory in particular for Tates Avenue. thanks in advance.Have been in Canada since 1958 but do remember the Telfords who lived on Ebor Parade....ran into one of the girls who lived near my cousins in Rathcool also one of the older boys still lived in the family home back in 2008 when I was home to bring back my Mother and Brothers ashes
I'm looking for Andrew Wallace. He ran an electrical business in 1959 and possibly lived in Malone Road. Can anyone help, please? Thanks.
I'm seeing nothing obvious in the 1960 phone book to fit "Wallace" and "electrical", the nearest to Malone Road is an A. Wallace living at 18 Sans Souci Park, another internet reference (Campbell College Register) cites Major A. Wallace of that address being the father of pupil Ian Robert Wallace, so no obvious connection I'm afraid. Perhaps someone with the street directory will have more luck.
:) Thanks for your reply CMcG,
Interestingly, I believe Andrew Wallace was a retired Captain or Major, but I don't know about an Ian.

Hi James James, Thank you for the quick reply. That is amazing, Harry in his younger days was a violinist. All the family were in the Theatre. Are there any directories later than 1960? I have had a look at the Clifton Cemetery and couldn't see his name are there any other cemeteries that are close to this address. Regards Trishfam
Definitely Cockin and not Corkin. ? Your typo or a spelling error in the 1961 or 1966 street directories.
Harry Hortin is also listed in the 1943 directory at 134 Manor Street as a grocer, so I'm definitely guessing that Mr./Mrs. Corkin/Cockin was/were perhaps either a business partner or a relative or both.
http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/mcomplete1943.htm (http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/mcomplete1943.htm)
It looks like a pretty rare surname in Belfast, even given that in 1918 some men would be overseas, in 1918 there were only two Horton surnames listed in Belfast.
Horton, Chas., flax buyer, 53 Ponsonby Avenue
Horton, Henry, musician, 52 Dargle Street
http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/alphanames1918HIJK.htm (http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/alphanames1918HIJK.htm)
In 1960 Dargle Street ran from 88 Cliftonpark Avenue to Manor Street. !
Hello a number of my husband's Gt Gpa's family lived at 24 Hatfield St., Cromac.
The Bell family had a farm in Comber yet by 1901 a number of Gt Gpa's siblings were living at this location and into the 1950's a sister Lizzy and her husband Wm James Smyth were still living there. I have often wondered why or when they moved to Hatfield Street and when the family finally left that home.
Could you pls check to see if Wm James & Lizzy Smyth are living at this location in 1959. Is there any such thing as a 1890's directory?
Thank you so much.
... No. 24 was vacant in the 1899 directory and was then occupied by Wm. Bell, collector, in the 1900 directory, collation of directories was typically 6 - 12 months before publication. You can see from the directories on the Lennon Wylie website when they then first appeared in no. 22 ...

My grandparents and great aunt lived in Twickenham street. The family name was McGregor and when my gran married she was Carter. My great aunt Nellie lived at the top of the street but she passed away before she had to leave. Sadly my grandparents have also died but my mother may remember your family if I can be of any help.
Would anyone have any info on Rathmore, Station Road, Greenisland please? Early 50's
I'm trying to find the Occupants of Hornby Street, early 1940's if possible. I don't have a house number only family name (Millar)
Also is there anyway I can find all names of Occupants during that time?
Thanks
The 1939 directory shows a Miller at no. 82, but not there in 1943 (large section vacant, possibly due to air raid):
https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/hcomplete1939.htm (https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/hcomplete1939.htm)
https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/hcomplete1943.htm (https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/hcomplete1943.htm)
These folk would appear to be related (I think house number 82 may have been mistranscribed as 52 in one of the records):
https://dof.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialSearch.aspx?GraveSection=E4&GraveNumber=187&CemeteryName=Dundonald%20Cemetery (https://dof.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialSearch.aspx?GraveSection=E4&GraveNumber=187&CemeteryName=Dundonald%20Cemetery)
BTW, the folk at no. 82 were James Millar and Elizabeth Jane Arthurs McLean who married in 1910, children included Robert born in 1911 and Mary born in 1913.
Hi CMcG could you look up Dunmurry in the 1939 register please? My family were Cassells and Hayes. They lived in Fortfield Cottage in Upper Dunmurry Lane but in 1939 Isaac and Catherine Lightbody were there and I had never heard of them.In 1901 my ggfather Archie Hayes and family were in 'Number23, Dunmurry' and in 1911 Number 24.
Thanks very much
David
The extract from the 1939 directory transcribed on the Lennon Wylie website covers Belfast streets only.I sent away to PRONI and they sent me the copy of the original transcript of the 1939 Register. Thanks for looking :)
However, the death notice for Isaac Lightbody on 7 May 1940 says "at his residence, Loan Head, Upper Dunmurry Lane, Isaac, dearly loved husband of Catherine Lightbody".
Where did you see it mentioned that Isaac and Catherine Lightbody were living in Fortfield Cottage?
I sent away to PRONI and they sent me the copy of the original transcript of the 1939 Register. Thanks for looking :)
If the 1939 register explicitly said "Fortfield Cottage" (as opposed to a house number / reference in Upper Dunmurry Lane that mightn't be Fortfield Cottage), then that's odd, for the occupation of Fortfield Cottage before 1939 is known and the 1940 death notice places the Lightbodys in another house - if the 1939 register specified "Fortfield Cottage", I wonder if it's wrong? It definitely does. Can't see how to post the image. I suspect it's a mistake as the family were in the same place since 1900 or before as I understand it.
It definitely does. Can't see how to post the image. I suspect it's a mistake as the family were in the same place since 1900 or before as I understand it.
Yes, I suspect it's a possibility as well...Have you seen Fortfield Cottage in previous directories? Would be great to know what the entries are.
Have you seen Fortfield Cottage in previous directories? Would be great to know what the entries are.
No, it was just in the knowledge that you had already established family residence in Fortfield Cottage before 1939, for example, you posted somewhere that Archie Hayes died there in 1933. And as Fortfield Cottage was the stated residence in the death notice for Mary Hayes in 1951, there's a good line of continuity for that specific address, which the Lightbodys inexplicably interrupt in what PRONI sent you.
... Isaac's wife Charlotte died in 1921 (there's a subsequent marriage of an Isaac Lightbody to a Catherine Ward in 1927), what's interesting is the given address for that death... "Loner Head Dunmurry", which I'm guessing is a variation on the "Loan Head" reference in Isaac's death notice of 1940:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1921/05092/4398353.pdf (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1921/05092/4398353.pdf)
And the son Robert mentioned above subsequently went into sales / auctioneering / valuation, with addresses at 17 Irish Quarter West Carrickfergus and 3 Cluan Place Belfast.
This is great Info! Thanks so much again for all your help. Looks like 1932 William Woods lives at 108 Butler Street. Thanks again!!
...Is any of this ringing bells for you?
There is a marriage of a William James Woods to an Ellen McIlmunn in Holy Cross Church Belfast in 1913 which you can view for free in the link to the official Irish Government genealogy website below:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1913/09870/5585308.pdf (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1913/09870/5585308.pdf)
...
Sorry for the delay I have twin 2 year olds so I hardly get time to do some research. Is there a way to find out who Catherine Woods born in 1920 (who in turn went on to marry Alexander Campbell in Holy Cross Church Belfast in 1941); Her Dad was ?? That’s a big mystery and I’ve tried myself to look but apparently I’m doing an awful job locating her Da or possibly her siblings Dad?
Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it so very much. This has been so much fun for my Da and I to chat about all our past relatives. We have come to a standstill with the generations. You have provided so much. Is there any chance to find a way to figure or who Catherine Woods Fathers was ? I do see that Susan Woods was the Mother but there is no Father listed. Any suggestions would be amazing. Thanks Richeal

Hi Everyone,
Thank you for all the information on Harry. I cant believe there is so much. I have been searching for him since 1993 in the UK as this was were the family came from and could not find anything on him from 1911, this explains a lot. I purchased a will on one of his brothers this week and that was how I found he was still alive and living in Belfast in 1956. It is great that Harry leads the Orchestra on several occasions, as his father was a music conductor for years. He would have been proud of him. Since looking for Harry in Belfast I have been reading all about what happened on Manor St and the surrounding areas in the early 1970's. It was not a good time to be living there. We read an article that 7,000 people were evacuated from the area. Is there anywhere where I could look to see if Harry was one of these people?
I just want to thank everyone again for your help with this.

Hello,
this may have already been asked
but, if you are so inclined,
I am interested in the highest number street address listed for Marine Street in Sailortown
we are looking to confirm a 110 Marine Street
76 is the highest number I have seen on the forum so far
thank you ~
I will try to post an image of the record. (following directions on how to send an image from another thread)
If it is of any interest... it is an older marriage record from 1890, listing a 110 Marine as residence. It has been suggested that it may be a false address/misrepresentation offered up vs an error.
The names are Middleton and Davison/Davidson (known as both). What is a bit interesting is that there is an Alex Davidson listed at #78 Marine Street in the 1890 directory that you posted.
(They are confirmed at other addresses in 1901, 1911 Census records, etc. - this one, early record indicates 110 Marine St.).

WOW!!! Thank You, that is a more detailed map view of the actual lots than I have seen and it is great to see the images as well and get a feel for what was in place. You are very welcome.... shout if you need any further info
We are taking a further look to see if the Davidson, at #78 in 1890, in the directory image that you provided is a relative.
We have lost much of a similar area, here - only a few streets remaining and an expressway cutting through.
THANK YOU !!!!
